[Varian, Luz is standing right there. She uses magic. She's used magic to save your ass more than once. Can you not. ]

Oh yeah, we've got a great garden, I'm sure she'll love it. And I'm fine, the recliner is only there for when I pass out from working.

[Which is a lot more often than his tone suggests. He blushes a little, clearing his throat. Nothing more scandalous happens than two sad teenager boys clinging to one another to try and stave off their collected nightmares, but he's still gonna be awkward about it.]

Hah. Yeah. And you know, I never thought to put pillows on the recliner. I'll make a note of that.

YOU think science is better. Science needs magic too, I've literally had to help you with magic several times. Besides, you're going to have someone in your house who regularly uses magic, so we're going to have to respect each other's way of doing stuff anyway.

[Really, putting one over the other was just silly, even if she'd indulged both Varian and Eda in their opinions on it at times].

Good. I'm glad to know that. She deserves to be able to grow her things in peace.

[He doesn't have to say it like it's pulling teeth but here he is. Luz is still the only person to get him this far with magic though. Even Eda didn't manage this much, she should be proud of herself. ]

She really does. She can have a quiet life here. Or...quiet as this place is? I guess we'll have to wait and see on that one.

Okay, okay. God, I forgot that you're actually really invested in my wellbeing. [Don't say that like it's a bad thing, Varian.] I don't know. There's... it looks like more city past the broadwalk? Maybe you can find a job there?

Thanks! It's annoying that you both even fight about that, like you're both really good at what you do! When you both flex like that about what's better, its as if you guys are afraid the other IS better somehow.

[Which was silly, since they were both really effective ways of seeing things].

I mean, I can't imagine it'll ever be quiet, but she'll have the room and she knows you guys, so it'll be better for her!

[His smile does soften at that, though. He does appreciate her looking out for him, even if he complains actively about it. ] Well, you might not have to yet. I can definitely do work if nothing else. There's always call for what skills I have.

I guess I'm doomed then.

Then it doesn't have to be an argument anymore, does it? As someone who had to learn science in school and magic on my own, I can testify that both of them are hard, even if the application is different.

Good. I don't think we need to stay quiet, do we? I know for sure you'll probably be busy in your lab, and I've got to practice my magic at odd hours.

[Luz blew a raspberry] Hey, I'm a teenager, I believe in earning my keep! Besides, that's what Eda would have wanted anyway. Just have to find the right job.

Oh, I don't know. I think there's still plenty to argue about.

[He says it with a joking tone, though. Despite everything, he kind of enjoyed his and Eda's posturing.]

Nah. I mean- Fern's never complained before anyway and Reaper just like...hides in the coffee table?

[He'll (mautrely) blow a raspberry right back!]

Well, if you say so. I guess we'll have to see what this place has for us.

Well sure. Like, who has the best disaster movie based on using it incorrectly, who has had the worst leaders, who has the best fictional character in the genre...but no one should be arguing over which is better.

[Because both, in Luz's opinion, were pretty difficult].

Heh, right, Fern is pretty...hides IN the coffee table? Don't you mean "under?"

...Okay admittedly a lot of those sound like pop culture arguments which I think you'll have a leg-up in over me on but sure.

[He chuckles.]

[He lets out a soft little heh, tensing a little at the word 'promise'. ]

Both science and magic are featured in pop culture stuff, and both have kind of been given a bad wrap at times. Do you know how many "science gone wrong" scenarios were visited in the nineties?

[Way too many].

Oh. Is that...fun?

[Someone might have been freaked out by that idea, but Luz was very much adjusted to the weird by this point].

I guess that depends on this place though, right?

I saw one of those! The first movie I saw was Jurassic Park, and it definitely had those don't play god vibes. I think they were a little too heavy-handed with it.

[He shrugs.]

Y'know, I never asked him. He seems to think it's fun. And yeah, we're just gonna have to see what this place has to offer.

Oh yeah, I love that movie! Best effects still, and it's a really great plot! I wouldn't say it's heavy handed, people who want to make money can tend to care more about that then safety. Sadly, that is a thing that is super accurate.

[Also the whole playing God thing yes, but still].

I might like that, but I don't think I'd want to stay on the surface too often.

That might be something we have to explore together. Got to get ahold of Dipper too.

I wouldn't really know. It's...pretty far from my scope of experience.

[People who have that kind of power over others tend to be royalty. Corporate greed does not yet exist in Varian's time.]

Oh yeah! Dipper would love that. God, I bet he's already having some kind of mental breakdown about this entire place- there's so much to explore and understand. I hope someone's near him to keep him from going overboard.

It's kind of a constant thing back home. So dinosaurs coming back, sort of impossible, but benefiting and then cutting corners so that people get hurt? Sadly very real.

[Luz would never claim she lived anywhere close to a perfect world on Earth, for many reasons].

I'm practically having one, I just mask it with how irritated I am I was almost eaten by crabs and that I started out my adventures all nude! I'm actually pretty amazed at what I'm seeing so far, and I really want to try and understand all of it!

Well... that's kinda depressing. I know which one of those two things I'd prefer to be more common.

[Spoilers: it's the dinosaurs. Okay, he'll grin in her direction.]

Well, I've got to give you props for keeping it convincingly together while everything else goes absolutely crazy around you. Good job! And yeah, me too. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. I'm just...adjusting.

The dinosaurs obviously! Maybe without so much of the killing of humans though. Those raptors were no joke.

[Boy, if people didn't think dinosaurs were descended from birds before...]

I mean, I was grumpy for a few hours, but I was lucky: I remembered things pretty quickly. I can't fault some people who were separated from their things, or their closest friends. I'm still looking for Margot, honestly.

[She still wasn't quite ready for the reality that Margot wasn't here, so here was hoping].

Well, no. You'd want to keep them in better enclosures with better failsafes in place. I mean, if you're on a tropical island maybe have a backup power than just electirity. Wow.

[It's not HARD you guys.]

That's good. Having something to focus on. We can keep an eye out for her and make sure she's okay. She might have got out on a different part of the beach.

Well sure, but if everything actually ran smoothly, that'd be a pretty boring movie. I hear you though, they really shouldn't cut corners when it comes to dinosaurs.

[Really, they were thwarted by their own hubris if you think about it].

I just found the staff, so I'm going to try and see if I can find her somewhere in all this mess. Can't fly too high though: don't know what's up in the sky in this new world, but I CAN say there seems to be some crazy stuff in the distance.

Oh, well...yeah, I guess it would be a boring movie.

Yeah, I think it's smart to play it safe. [Uh oh.] ...How crazy are we talking about?

I mean, I know it's super dangerous and obviously a lot of people die, but part of the whole point of Jurassic Park is seeing people making choices in the midst of dying and learning that humanity has to cut back on what it can do so quickly, right?

[In other words, test things out, GRADUALLY bring dinosaurs into existence by seeing how they respond to the environment, things like that will make it so there's less likely a possibility of another break out. Also, less treating dinosaurs like some kind of commodity].

There's a place next to this one, but you can see how different it is from a view. Something about it is dark, like, complicated. It's hard to describe. I couldn't help but get the feeling that I shouldn't be trying to stay in the skies too long. Almost like I might...make something mad.

I guess so? I mean, the future is already pretty obsessed with getting everything done as quickly as possible, so that makes sense. Why not apply that to dinosaurs too? Or maybe it's just a movie about dinosaurs eating people, who knows.

[Movie critics? He knows those people exist. For some reason.]

Huh. Did you feel any disorientation? Exhaustion? Fern and Glitch went really deep into Deerington's woods once and they felt that- turning them back to town. It might be the same sort of magical field, keeping people from leaving.

It was a book first, and I guess the author wanted to make it realistic and suspenseful!
Honestly, I always really loved the way they captured how intense the dinosaurs were and everything! I always get excited to watch it!

[Maybe less so with that guy that gets eaten while he's on the toilet. Gross. Also, he left the kids to die, not cool].

More like...uneasiness. Like there were people watching and disapproving. I'm really not sure how to describe it, but I know that I didn't want to stay up there too long.

[WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT!!! ]

Oh. Well. That's really spooky. Maybe it's another way of keeping us tied here. I guess we'll have to see how far we can go out before that feeling hits. See what sort of radius we're working with.

Yeah, it translates to a pretty great movie, but it IS a good book, and I'd know, I'm a book worm back home! Actually, I never knew why they do this, but they actually reverse the boy and girl, since the boy is the computer kid and the girl's kind of a tomboy. I thought that was super reductive, but that's why I'm not in Hollywood.

[She also thought it was sexist, but she was not going to go there now].

I think we'll have to move out from here to really find out what's going on around here. You're right. Makes things all the more scary.

Huh. That doesn't make any sense. I mean, guys and girls can be both? There's no... hard and fast rule saying a girl can be one thing but a boy can't right? That- that's not a thing in the future is it?

[Sorry, Varian, you were just lucky to live in a Kingdom that doesn't really give a shit about gender norms. ]

Well. We'll see if we can find the others first, Fern and Margot at least- and then see if we can find the house from there. Makes sense we do it as a group, right?
