SEPTEMBER 2021 TEST DRIVE MEME
OUR GAME IS OFFICIALLY OPEN TO THE PUBLIC ON OCTOBER 1st.
Reserves open on September 26th. Applications open on October 1st.
Welcome to another Deer Country test drive meme! Our test drive memes are open to anyone interested - regardless of whether or not you join our game!
All Test Drive Memes are game canon. Players can choose to keep their TDM threads canon or not. TDM threads can be used for AC and can be used as your writing sample for your application.
Our TDMs serve as a way to build into the actual lore and worldbuilding of Deer Country and we strongly encourage everyone to enjoy and participate! Current players are always welcome to pull prompts from the TDM to reference on the Network or bring into logs as well as tag out to new characters top-leveling on the TDM itself.
Characters will always be able to actively die during TDMs as this is an extremely dangerous world. You can still have this be game canon! Check out how character death in Deer Country works here.

WHEN: End of September to mid October

You're one of the lucky ones. Your journey is smooth sailing and you wind up exactly where you're supposed to: on the Farther Shores. You grow out of your squid body without a hitch, either with the help of another Sleeper or one of the Wakers, and you get to discover this new world. All new Sleepers might take some time to find their bearings. It might be tricky to remember how to use your body parts the way you're supposed to. You might stumble around the beach or forget how to talk - but don't worry! It'll come back to you sooner or later.
Hopefully, you've found something to wear, either in your Welcoming Bag or otherwise, and can start familiarizing yourself with your surroundings. Maybe you help some other squids out on the beach. Waking up sucks! You feel for the little guys. And hey, maybe you're hoping one of those squids is a good friend...Stranger things have happened.
SEASONAL DETAILS ON THE BOARDWALK
The Boardwalk is quite the spectacle this time of year. Pumpkins have been stacked on spikes lining the Boardwalk with grotesquely realistic carvings of faces decorated on them. Massive white linen has been hung in the air to look like ghosts floating back and forth against the ocean wind.
Delicious smells waft from the Boardwalk as fresh donuts, candied apples, and hot apple cider are sold at every other booth. One or two booths are set up offering Face Painting, Natives explaining to new Sleepers that face paint was integral to the survival of Trench sometimes - especially during the month of October. "We do it to disguise ourselves from roaming spirits and hungry beasts."
You hear rumors of something known as The Black Parade coming soon and there seems to be a festive buzz about the event. The weather has gotten a little too chilly to enjoy the beach in bathing suits, but there are other ways to take a bit of a break before committing your life to the terrors of Trench! In the evening, natives will go out to the beaches and set up cozy bonfires in clusters. They will throw in batches of incense to keep the beaches safe and fill the air with the warm, comforting scent of cinammon. Smores are generously enjoyed around these fires. Stick around and you will hear some natives telling stories about Legendary Ghosts. They might ask you if you know any stories like that too.
But of course, they give a caution about ghost stories: "Careful. You'll never know when you'll start living a ghost story yourself..."

You are pulled beneath Trench and into the currents that circulate throughout the city. You are jostled through the complex sewage system or waterways and get tossed between the stone tunnels until finally you're spilling down into a deep, deep well. You hit the still water at the bottom, easily a hundred feet down, and everything is finally quiet. The water here is quiet and still: nothing like the hurdling ocean water and channels you were pulled through. Up above you can see a perfect circle of light: the opening to the Well.
Another soul is plopped out next to you. Perhaps a familiar face or someone you've never met before. It's good to know you're not alone. Still - how to get out? There's some low pressure in the Well weighing down on you, but more than that, the pressure seems to dull abilities almost completely. You can't just fly out or zoom up the walls as you might normally be able to. The walls are made out of wet cobblestone and they are slick and difficult to get a grip on. You're sooner to destroy your nails than make it even halfway up. And it's a long way up.
Maybe there's something around you that might help? Being thrown into the Well at least comes with the benefit that your Welcoming Bag is floating in the water with you. Maybe there's something useful inside or you can use your new Omni to send a distress call. Or use your Omen to try and help someone find out where in this godforsaken place you are.
Your Welcoming Bag isn't the only thing floating around in the water with you. A human skull bumps into you before sinking down under the water. Something slides through the water beneath your feet, wisps of hair glancing over your ankles.
Suddenly the heavy sound of stone sliding against stone comes from above. Someone is sealing up the Well. Your light is running out and just as the last sliver of light casts across the water, you see a humanoid-looking creature peering at you from the other side of the Well. Then everything goes dark.
Torn fingernails rip across your arm and you're yanked underwater. The moment your blood surfaces, even just a drop of it, you're revitalized with your power (if you have any). For those who are warmblooded and common, you will find that you can suddenly at least see in the dark almost perfectly. You can also see a distinct pattern along the stone wall that could be more easily climbed than anywhere else. Now the challenge is to just try and get there.
The girl in the Well with you is violent and ferocious. She will try to drown you or break your body as quickly as she can and will use the dark and the water against you. She cannot be killed, but she can be temporarily stunned and thrown back. Once you begin climbing, she's quicker out of the water, crawling up the wall after you in spastic, contorting motions. The only true way to stop her is to get out of the Well and seal it back up. You realize that whoever had originally closed the Well wasn't doing it because of you...They were doing it because of her.
If you fail to seal the Well afterwards, the girl in the Well will haunt you. She will endlessly stalk people and drag them down into the waterways of Trench. She travels primarily through water and must be confined to the Well or else. The Well is located in the Trenchwoods close by the Wayward Station.

WHEN: Can happen any time someone goes too far out into the Pthumerian Ocean
WHERE: Middle of the Pthumerian Ocean
CONTENT WARNINGS: Being swallowed alive, travel inside a beast, possibility of killing a beast, organ-centric horror.

Like many Sleepers, you might get swept further out into the ocean before you're swept towards the Farther Shores. It's not the ideal scenario and immediately puts you in a vulnerable position. When you break the surface this time, you're in the middle of an unusually calm ocean. Where are the waves? Where is the commotion of the ocean? Although you're completely alone, you don't feel alone.
Pressure is building up beneath you. Something is coming towards you. You can feel the water beginning to churn about and you need to start swimming. Now. Still too disoriented from reincarnation, you probably don't have enough sense of self to use any sort of powers to get out of the situation. There's a tremendous roar, and suddenly, the world is going dark all around you, walls of red coming up on every side. Massive white stones jut out at you and it takes you a moment before you realize what's even happening.
A monster is about to swallow you whole. It's significantly bigger than you to the point where you've washed down its throat without a single injury. You don't even know what swallowed you, but you're sliding down the throat and through its body within seconds. You somehow get tossed to a strange part of its body and land on a fleshy surface and discover you're not the only thing this creature has eaten. Other Sleeper(s) are nearby, and maybe even some pets, all more shocked than hurt.
Looks like you've been had. But it's far from the worst. Everyone's okay and there doesn't actually seem to be anything inside of the monster that's interested in hurting you. Avoid the stomach acid and figure out the insides and you might actually just make your way out of the creature without incident. Most of the monsters who swallow Sleepers don't seem to even realize what they did, and you can usually find your way out the way you came in. Along the way, you might discover some other interesting things inside of the body such as swallowed ships with interesting resources, some of your items from home or other people's homes...And of course, you'll probably find a lot of skeletons of creatures swallowed long before you. Not everything can figure their way out of a massive creature.
You can always hack your way out of the creature but that's gory and tough work. These are behemoth beings and even cutting your way out won't necessarily mean you killed it - but it probably does mean you're going to really piss it off. Then again, it's so big, will it really even bother to fight back?
The situation can be admittedly disgusting. There's nothing fun about swimming up a creature's bloodstream or having to navigate its intestines. Some creatures are bigger than others, making the journey far more complicated. Others are smaller, easier to escape. If you upset someone's stomach, you might even just get puked up and that might be one of the simplest ways to get out of dodge.
The monsters can look like anything and be nearly any size. The Pthumerian Ocean is massive and contains massive beasts and lesser Pthumerians. Once your character has gotten out of the beast, they will find that they are much closer to the Farther Shores. They might even wind up beaching the creature they're in if they're really lucky! Navigating the creatures isn't too unlike navigating a complex cave. The only difference is the walls around you are some sort of organ.

Rapunzel | Tangled: The Series
[This isn't the first time Rapunzel's form has changed to something so distinctly non-human. She still remembers, what almost feels like a lifetime ago, when she and Cassandra had been changed into birds; sight and sound had taken on entirely different feels, and she felt alien in what was arguably her own body. Having to learn to move differently had been a strange yet utterly freeing one... and there was a somewhat similar feeling in this. Drifting endlessly, weightlessly, the feeling of too-many-limbs propelling her forward as her mind continues to drift...
It's a nice dream. It's far better than the dreams she's been having lately - dreams of Cassandra tearing the castle down, dreams of their big fight in the tower, dreams of Cassandra's angry, bitter expression surrounded by flames. This dream now may be a flowing void of nothing, but maybe if she holds onto it, just a little longer...
So caught up in this feeling is Rapunzel that, when the little purple squid washes up on the black-sand beach with bioluminescent yellow spots and streaks flashing across its skin, she doesn't start moving just yet. The squid's body swells and ripples, transforming into a frekle-faced girl with the longest hair anyone has possibly ever seen. A beat, then another...
And then the girl jolts up, naked but so swathed in damp golden-blonde that barely anything from her shoulders downward could be seen.]
Pascal?
[Of course she'll be calling out to her very best friend first. He'd been asleep on her pillow next to her! But when she takes a good look around... a heavy weight drops into her gut. This... this isn't any kind of Coronan beach she's ever seen before.
Something's wrong. Very wrong.]
Eugene? Anyone???
[Rapunzel shakily gets to her feet, absently pulling at her hair to gather it up - and then realizes that that same hair is the only thing offering her any sort of modesty. Letting out a mortified eep!, she drops back to her knees and bundles her hair around her, forming a makeshift cocoon and hiding herself from anyone else's wandering eyes.]
U-Um! Is anyone out there???
[B; Boardwalk]
[Distractions are good. Distracts are what's kept Rapunzel going for the past few months in Corona. It's not to say that she's completely forgetting about everything - waking up in a strange new world, all while tensions are building back home - but she doesn't like dwelling on the negative. Not all the time. Sometimes she needs to come up for air, or else all of those worries will wind up smothering her.
So after cleaning herself up a bit and finding some suitable clothes, Rapunzel takes off! She'll be poking around literally every stall with her eyes practically shining in delight at all the treats; she keeps coming back to the candied apples, but it's the hot cider that seems to pique her interest the most. She keeps the cup held close to her face, hands wrapped snugly around it like she's trying to absorb all of its warmth.]
This is amazing! I never thought about hot cider before. It's like a whole new experience!
[C; Bonfire]
[Alternatively, once night falls, some of the others might find Rapunzel near one of the bonfires. She's got her hair undone this time, laid out in loose circles around herself as she bundles up close to one of the bonfires. Her hair was soaked when she first woke up, and seventy feet of hair doesn't dry very quickly - she's doing her best to brush the sand out of it as it dries, but after a while she gives up and just... relaxes. Without the distraction the food booths had to offer, a lot of her worries begin to whisper at the edges of her mind, bu she shakes her head to push them back. She just... wants to enjoy the moment, for now. She'll figure things out later.]
This is really nice. [It's not said with any of her excitement from earlier, but more calm. Not quite relaxed, but she's not jittery or on edge.] It's been a while since I've sat around a campfire on a beach! But it wasn't anything this big before... I kinda like it.
[Something... shifts in her expression at that. Or maybe it's just the shadows cast by the flickering flames?]
It's easy to just... not think when you're watchng the fire, huh?
[D; Wildcard]
[Got something that doesn't fit into any of the prompts? Throw it here! If you want to hash something out beforehand, feel free to shoot me a PM over at
Arrival
Although, in hindsight, Usagi still wouldn't be all THAT upset about her nudity.
But she did understand that others might be. This is why she immediately has robes on hand helping the new arrivals. When she hears someone call out and hair that is going and going and GOING she immediately knows who the other blonde is. How could she not? She smiles and crouches down in front of her.]
Hello. Let's get you in something warm, yeah? Can you stand?
no subject
Gosh, yeah - that'd be a huge help. [The chill will be with her for a while, what with it taking hours for her hair to dry, so warm clothes might not help on that note. But clothes in general would be really nice right about now!] I-I promise this isn't like... a thing that happens! I don't even know how it happened!

B LET'S DO THIS
And a familiar voice.
And then he's dropping his apple.
He's seen Rapunzel before, back in Deerington in Varian's memories. He's met Rapunzel, she (or a version of her) had shown up in the town briefly, not recognized Varian, and then left. And now here she is again, right there.
Fern races on over to her, looking utterly bewildered.]
Y - you're - Rapunzel??!!
HECK YEAH HECK YEAH
But there's someone calling out to her, and her shoulders seem to sag a little in relief as she turns - only for her eyebrows to shoot up in surprise.
She's seen non-humans before. She's seen mermaids and fish-people (there's a difference!) and all sorts of fantastical creatures on her journey past Corona's walls. But she's never seen someone all green like that before.]
Oh- hi, yeah! That's me! Who... who are you?

A
It's okay. Here - [Shiro holds the coat out towards her. He keeps his eyes on his feet, for the young woman's sake. Also partially to keep from stepping on any other squids laying around.] - it's not much, but we'll find you robes in a minute, all right?
no subject
[Oh. Oh that's perfect! With a grateful smile, Rapunzel wraps the coat around herself, shifting and tugging at her hair so that she could make a makeshift skirt out of it, to cover what the zipped-up coat can't.]
You're... surprisingly casual about this. [She laughs.] Do people wash up on this beach often?
[It sounds like she's trying to make a joke. Too bad she doesn't realize how much of a joke it isn't.]
(no subject)
Arrival
And yet he still does it- and when he hears that familiar voice and sees the mass of familiar, long, long long blonde hair, his heart about stops. Only for a beat, and then he's racing over to her. For a moment, he forgets about the fact the last time he saw her the hair was gone, he forgets he's very obviously down a leg, he forgets that her memories might be scrambled or she might be from a point of time where she hasn't even met him at all yet. Even if he did remember those things, he wouldn't care. Because she's here and that's all that matters.
He grabs a welcoming back from a Waker drifting over to her, coming to a skidding halt on the sand in front of her- pulling a cloak out of the bag to quickly drape over her shoulders. It's only his common sense leaking through to preserve at least some of her dignity that he doesn't immediately latch onto a hug, but his hands do move to grip her arms tightly. His chest feels tight and panicked because the last time he saw her was Never Mind's sick game to make him talk about his regrets, and she definitely wasn't alive then. But she's here and she's breathing and she's okay and if he keeps thinking that enough maybe this will prove to be real and not another lie. ]
Rapunzel! [For once, he goes for her name, instead of his usual, easy, Princess- part nickname, part title. His voice cracks a little and he does his best to hold it together. She's here, she's breathing, she's okay. ] It's- it's okay. You're safe.
[Not a complete truth, Trench is categorically not safe, but right at this second, woe betide anything or anyone who tried to hurt her. He realises, belatedly, that his hands are shaking as they grip her, and he sucks in a shuddery breath. ]
Did- did you get hurt coming in?
no subject
Or so she thinks. As she smiles that bright, sunny smile of hers, mirroring his actions and reaching up to grip his shoulders, she's staring at him, his face - not down just yet, where she'd realize instantly something is wrong.]
Yeah- yeah, I'm okay! I'm just... [Confused. Worried.] Where are we?

I've never even heard of cider before this! I like it.
[It's sweet and hot, what's not to like?]
I've tried cold sweet food before, but this is my first time having something hot and sweet.
[So overall, it's a very novel experience. He finds it amazing how many sweet things are available on land.]
no subject
You mean you've never had hot chocolate before??? You're really missing out!
[It's one of the best things ever????]
That's like... the best thing to drink on a cold winter day!

C
[The campfires had caught his attention, listening to locals and sleepers alike tell stories. Hearing about legends and ghosts from different worlds and cultures was practically catnip to Dipper, and he sat near the fire with his journal out, making notes against the gentle crackle of flames.]
[He's a little easy to miss this way, since he hadn't bothered to speak up too much himself, content to listen to everyone else's stories. When Rapunzel speaks, he glaces up with a frown.]
[Wow. That's a lot of fucking hair.]
There's definitely something mesmerizing about a good campfire.
[But ...if someone is naturally dissociating in front of a campfire, probably they have a lot on their mind they don't want to think about. It's not something Dipper is a stranger to. He falls quiet a moment before he offers:]
Wanna hear a ghost story?
no subject
So yeah. Totally not any kind of dissociation going on here.]
Oooh, I love spooky stories. Go for it!
[And maybe after she can talk about how she met a ghost once! Well... she's met several ghosts. But only one was nice, really. The others just kinda wanted to steal her powers for their evil demon master.]
(no subject)
b
He just got a cup of hot cider, holding it close to keep his fingers warm when he hears Rapunzel's exclamation. He turns to her with a laugh ]
I know, right? Oh, boy, are you new? There are so many amazing things you have to try here! Have you heard of pizza?
no subject
[Trust Rapunzel to be someone who can laugh off suddenly waking up in another world. It's not that she's not worried - she really is, and there's a sense of heaviness in her tone even as she laughs - but she knows if she only focuses on worrying, she'll make herself sick with it. So she'll enjoy all these new experiences for now, just until she can get her head on straight again.]
And I can't say I've ever heard of pizza! What kind of food is that?
(no subject)
A
The long hair was the biggest give away. Who else would have this been? She'd heard Varian describe her enough, she'd even SPOKEN to her once, so there was no mistaking: it was Rapunzel! Luz was about to make a beeline for her when she saw her recoil in a start because, well, nude. Luz nodded to herself and flew over to where some of the civilians were hoarding the robes. It took a minute or two to convince them it was NOT for her, and finally she was back in the skies. It was much easier to spot Rapunzel and she gave a wave before descending down to her, robe in hand, along with a hot dog].
"Hi! Figured you might need this! Hey, forgive me if I'm wrong, but you're Rapunzel, aren't you?"
no subject
Besides, she has clothes! Something Rapunzel desperately needs right now. So with a grateful nod, she takes the robe, pulling it into her hair cocoon and trying her best to slide it on while still hiding herself from any other wandering eyes.]
I am, yeah! And you're a lifesaver, you know that? I... I don't know how that happened...
(no subject)

She gives a cheery wave with her pincer as she approaches and answers her question.]
Scorpia's here, that's who! [After a beat, she points a pincer towards herself.] That's me. I'm Scorpia! In case that wasn't obvious.
oh this is going to be the BEST cr
But the thing is; there's no hint of fear or revulsion or uncertainty as Scorpia approaches. In fact, she almost looks... awed? It's definitely an intense look of curiosity, and if she hadn't been naked under all that hair, Rapunzel would be scrambling up to meet the woman as she approaches.]
Whoa... are those real?
Yes it will be!!

Rapunzel's movements catch his attention before her words do, and he nearly does a double-take when his brain registers just how much hair she has. It's not the wildest thing he's ever seen, not by a long shot, but it might be one of the most baffling. Hair that long hardly seems practical. Wouldn't it get in the way...? Ah, wait. She's speaking to him. Maybe. Honestly, Kakashi can't tell if she's talking to him specifically or just to anyone close enough to hear, but...he catches the brief shadow that crosses her expression, and her words do resonate.
He considers her, mulls over her words a moment. The corner of his eye crinkles in a smile that doesn't quite reach his mouth. Which is...probably strange, considering it's usually the other way around. ]
It can be, if there are things you don't want to think about.

It's not that she doesn't want to think about those things. She can't, not when she knows more about what happened with Cassandra and her "friend". She just can't let it overwhelm her. So Kakashi's words hit a chord deep inside of her heart, but she smiles past it and laughs.]
Yeah, there sure is a lot to think about. I've been through some weird adventures, but nothing can quite hold a candle to this. But the people have been super nice so far, so it's not all that bad!

[ It's very nice to be enjoying the fire and the moment and having all this cool evening sand to flop down on. Like many young girls before her, Alice has become wildly compelled by all. This. Hair!! and is not polite enough to ask before burrowing under a big hank of it like a blanket. ]

Hey now, sometimes thinking too much is okay! Sometimes it's only when I think too much that I can really brainstorm some of my best paintings or sketches.

[The soft-spoken, velvety-smooth voice definitely does not fit the demonic-looking visage it comes from. Maul's the stuff of human nightmares, something he's more than aware of by now. It's hard to see most of what Maul looks like given he has his hood up right now and the shadows cast from the campfire blend in with his black tattoos to muddle the features of his face, but enough can be seen to definitely determine he's anything but human.]

But she's not the same person she was two years ago. She's learned time and time again that someone's appearances, and even the vibe they give off, doesn't necessarily define how they may be as a person. So she smiles, nodding in agreement with him.]
The stars can do that to me too. Especially when you're far away from any sort of city or town, and all you can see is stars... [It was one of the best parts of their journey to the Dark Kingdom.] It's like a sea of lights, yeah?
