September 2021 TEST DRIVE MEME

SEPTEMBER 2021 TEST DRIVE MEME
OUR GAME IS OFFICIALLY OPEN TO THE PUBLIC ON OCTOBER 1st.
Reserves open on September 26th. Applications open on October 1st.

Welcome to another Deer Country test drive meme! Our test drive memes are open to anyone interested - regardless of whether or not you join our game!

All Test Drive Memes are game canon. Players can choose to keep their TDM threads canon or not. TDM threads can be used for AC and can be used as your writing sample for your application.

Our TDMs serve as a way to build into the actual lore and worldbuilding of Deer Country and we strongly encourage everyone to enjoy and participate! Current players are always welcome to pull prompts from the TDM to reference on the Network or bring into logs as well as tag out to new characters top-leveling on the TDM itself.

Characters will always be able to actively die during TDMs as this is an extremely dangerous world. You can still have this be game canon! Check out how character death in Deer Country works here.

If you have any questions about the TDM, please ask down below!

STANDARD ARRIVAL
WHEN: End of September to mid October
WHERE: The Farther Shores/The Boardwalk
CONTENT WARNINGS: N/A

You're one of the lucky ones. Your journey is smooth sailing and you wind up exactly where you're supposed to: on the Farther Shores. You grow out of your squid body without a hitch, either with the help of another Sleeper or one of the Wakers, and you get to discover this new world. All new Sleepers might take some time to find their bearings. It might be tricky to remember how to use your body parts the way you're supposed to. You might stumble around the beach or forget how to talk - but don't worry! It'll come back to you sooner or later.

Hopefully, you've found something to wear, either in your Welcoming Bag or otherwise, and can start familiarizing yourself with your surroundings. Maybe you help some other squids out on the beach. Waking up sucks! You feel for the little guys. And hey, maybe you're hoping one of those squids is a good friend...Stranger things have happened.

SEASONAL DETAILS ON THE BOARDWALK

The Boardwalk is quite the spectacle this time of year. Pumpkins have been stacked on spikes lining the Boardwalk with grotesquely realistic carvings of faces decorated on them. Massive white linen has been hung in the air to look like ghosts floating back and forth against the ocean wind.

Delicious smells waft from the Boardwalk as fresh donuts, candied apples, and hot apple cider are sold at every other booth. One or two booths are set up offering Face Painting, Natives explaining to new Sleepers that face paint was integral to the survival of Trench sometimes - especially during the month of October. "We do it to disguise ourselves from roaming spirits and hungry beasts."

You hear rumors of something known as The Black Parade coming soon and there seems to be a festive buzz about the event. The weather has gotten a little too chilly to enjoy the beach in bathing suits, but there are other ways to take a bit of a break before committing your life to the terrors of Trench! In the evening, natives will go out to the beaches and set up cozy bonfires in clusters. They will throw in batches of incense to keep the beaches safe and fill the air with the warm, comforting scent of cinammon. Smores are generously enjoyed around these fires. Stick around and you will hear some natives telling stories about Legendary Ghosts. They might ask you if you know any stories like that too.

But of course, they give a caution about ghost stories: "Careful. You'll never know when you'll start living a ghost story yourself..."
WELLNESS
WHEN: Always - this monster permanently exists in Trench
WHERE: Near the Wayward Station in a Well
CONTENT WARNINGS: Bodily contortion, nail trauma, being trapped, possible drowning, "child" appearing monster.

You are pulled beneath Trench and into the currents that circulate throughout the city. You are jostled through the complex sewage system or waterways and get tossed between the stone tunnels until finally you're spilling down into a deep, deep well. You hit the still water at the bottom, easily a hundred feet down, and everything is finally quiet. The water here is quiet and still: nothing like the hurdling ocean water and channels you were pulled through. Up above you can see a perfect circle of light: the opening to the Well.

Another soul is plopped out next to you. Perhaps a familiar face or someone you've never met before. It's good to know you're not alone. Still - how to get out? There's some low pressure in the Well weighing down on you, but more than that, the pressure seems to dull abilities almost completely. You can't just fly out or zoom up the walls as you might normally be able to. The walls are made out of wet cobblestone and they are slick and difficult to get a grip on. You're sooner to destroy your nails than make it even halfway up. And it's a long way up.

Maybe there's something around you that might help? Being thrown into the Well at least comes with the benefit that your Welcoming Bag is floating in the water with you. Maybe there's something useful inside or you can use your new Omni to send a distress call. Or use your Omen to try and help someone find out where in this godforsaken place you are.

Your Welcoming Bag isn't the only thing floating around in the water with you. A human skull bumps into you before sinking down under the water. Something slides through the water beneath your feet, wisps of hair glancing over your ankles.

Suddenly the heavy sound of stone sliding against stone comes from above. Someone is sealing up the Well. Your light is running out and just as the last sliver of light casts across the water, you see a humanoid-looking creature peering at you from the other side of the Well. Then everything goes dark.

Torn fingernails rip across your arm and you're yanked underwater. The moment your blood surfaces, even just a drop of it, you're revitalized with your power (if you have any). For those who are warmblooded and common, you will find that you can suddenly at least see in the dark almost perfectly. You can also see a distinct pattern along the stone wall that could be more easily climbed than anywhere else. Now the challenge is to just try and get there.

The girl in the Well with you is violent and ferocious. She will try to drown you or break your body as quickly as she can and will use the dark and the water against you. She cannot be killed, but she can be temporarily stunned and thrown back. Once you begin climbing, she's quicker out of the water, crawling up the wall after you in spastic, contorting motions. The only true way to stop her is to get out of the Well and seal it back up. You realize that whoever had originally closed the Well wasn't doing it because of you...They were doing it because of her.

If you fail to seal the Well afterwards, the girl in the Well will haunt you. She will endlessly stalk people and drag them down into the waterways of Trench. She travels primarily through water and must be confined to the Well or else. The Well is located in the Trenchwoods close by the Wayward Station.
SWALLOWED
WHEN: Can happen any time someone goes too far out into the Pthumerian Ocean
WHERE: Middle of the Pthumerian Ocean
CONTENT WARNINGS: Being swallowed alive, travel inside a beast, possibility of killing a beast, organ-centric horror.

Like many Sleepers, you might get swept further out into the ocean before you're swept towards the Farther Shores. It's not the ideal scenario and immediately puts you in a vulnerable position. When you break the surface this time, you're in the middle of an unusually calm ocean. Where are the waves? Where is the commotion of the ocean? Although you're completely alone, you don't feel alone.

Pressure is building up beneath you. Something is coming towards you. You can feel the water beginning to churn about and you need to start swimming. Now. Still too disoriented from reincarnation, you probably don't have enough sense of self to use any sort of powers to get out of the situation. There's a tremendous roar, and suddenly, the world is going dark all around you, walls of red coming up on every side. Massive white stones jut out at you and it takes you a moment before you realize what's even happening.

A monster is about to swallow you whole. It's significantly bigger than you to the point where you've washed down its throat without a single injury. You don't even know what swallowed you, but you're sliding down the throat and through its body within seconds. You somehow get tossed to a strange part of its body and land on a fleshy surface and discover you're not the only thing this creature has eaten. Other Sleeper(s) are nearby, and maybe even some pets, all more shocked than hurt.

Looks like you've been had. But it's far from the worst. Everyone's okay and there doesn't actually seem to be anything inside of the monster that's interested in hurting you. Avoid the stomach acid and figure out the insides and you might actually just make your way out of the creature without incident. Most of the monsters who swallow Sleepers don't seem to even realize what they did, and you can usually find your way out the way you came in. Along the way, you might discover some other interesting things inside of the body such as swallowed ships with interesting resources, some of your items from home or other people's homes...And of course, you'll probably find a lot of skeletons of creatures swallowed long before you. Not everything can figure their way out of a massive creature.

You can always hack your way out of the creature but that's gory and tough work. These are behemoth beings and even cutting your way out won't necessarily mean you killed it - but it probably does mean you're going to really piss it off. Then again, it's so big, will it really even bother to fight back?

The situation can be admittedly disgusting. There's nothing fun about swimming up a creature's bloodstream or having to navigate its intestines. Some creatures are bigger than others, making the journey far more complicated. Others are smaller, easier to escape. If you upset someone's stomach, you might even just get puked up and that might be one of the simplest ways to get out of dodge.

The monsters can look like anything and be nearly any size. The Pthumerian Ocean is massive and contains massive beasts and lesser Pthumerians. Once your character has gotten out of the beast, they will find that they are much closer to the Farther Shores. They might even wind up beaching the creature they're in if they're really lucky! Navigating the creatures isn't too unlike navigating a complex cave. The only difference is the walls around you are some sort of organ.

boardwalk.
[ If you wander out to the boardwalk, you might find a tall young woman wrapped in dark robes with a longsword strapped to her back, having a grand old time. And who can blame her? Gideon Nav has just narrowly escaped drowning twice in a fifteen-minute period. She's trying some sort of strange, orange-colored candy miniature triangles for the first time in her life. She is absolutely vibing.

If you approach her, you may notice that in addition to the robes and sword, she's sporting some thick aviators and a few dabs of black-and-white face paint. By way of greeting and explanation, she says: ]

Apparently, face painting's tradition here, which, damn, apparently I can't catch a break? Whatever. At least this party's a lot less decrepit and there are people, like, talking and stuff. That's cool. I can do your face, if you want. [ Gideon gestures at her own paint. ] I call this look the frosty cougar. It's super popular with the locals here. [ it is not. ] And the ladies.

[ Because that's what we're all looking for in skull face paint at the end of the day, right? ]

wellness.
[ Well, this sucks. This is super gross. Super Ninth, actually. Gideon takes a moment to lean against the wall, bury her face in her hands, and let out a very dramatic: ]

Ugghh.

[ Then, as if right on cue, a human skull floats over. Gideon snags it and then turns to look at you, her stare dead-eyed and annoyed. ]

Seriously?

[ Why this. Why the skulls in a dark pit beneath the ground. Gideon has had more than enough of that, thank you very much. ]

[Whoa. Who. Who was this girl?

Luz obviously understood she was a newcomer and all, but man. There were really times where she wondered if people just walked out looking cool or if it was something calculated. The sword. The guns. The glasses. Neat.]

It does look really good.

[That line about the ladies makes Luz jump slightly].

Ha! I doubt it! B-but saying I did, what would you suggest?

[Luz was bad, in her eyes, at any kind of romantic whatever in general. Any tips would be appreciated].

[ Akechi's barely been in Trench a month and he's already completely sick of this place. While Gideon indulges her theatrics he takes a moment to haul himself upright, flicking water off his for a moment before he gives up and accepts that he's fighting a losing battle. Gideon's question-slash-accusation get a short exhale from Akechi that almost but not quite passes as a laugh. ]

Newcomer?

[ He asks with the sort of airy confidence that no one who's only just arrived himself should ever exhibit. ]

Seriously. The 'gods' of this place think they're being cute.

i. nude beach (arrival)
[So he's not a stranger to weird shit, but the fever dream where he was a squid and then washed up on the beach where someone stroked his squid body until it turned human is a whole new level of screwed up. He's in and out of consciousness in his human form now, naked with one side of his face pressed into the black sand and finally, he pushes himself up on shaking arms and blearily looks over at whoever's near him.

Maybe it's you who came to wake him and help, or maybe you're equally dazed and confused and new to this world. Either way his brain takes a good few seconds to process the situation before he's screaming and scrambling, fumbling backwards with wayward limbs and big, animated gestures.]

AHHHH! WHodkjfv-

[He can't seem to speak- shit, shit he's trapped in another dream. He starts hyperventilating and looks down at his hands, trying to ground himself by counting all his fingers. When he finishes, he can't quite believe it and looks around, then... down at himself. He yelps and grabs the first item he sees (his welcoming bag and places it over his crotch. Then slowly and awkwardly starts to stand.]

Uh, hey. Nothing to see here. Just thought this was the, uh, y'know, the nude beach. My mistake. [Awkward half waves of his hand are given to any passersby of natives and sleepers alike as he talks. Then a stands still for a couple moments more before bolting at a full speed run down the beach.]
ii. the well of evil
[Seriously, at this rate he's going to lose his voice with all the screaming he's doing. He's still not sure he's awake and this isn't all some very vivid dream again, but regardless he's here and has a normal amount of fingers and.. shit, he should count his toes too, you never know. But he eventually figured out the welcoming bag enough to get dressed and he was about to put every ounce of what he's learned from watching his father solve crimes into sorting through the rest of the contents... but Trench had other ideas.

All he did was step back into the water to investigate the strange feel of the ocean and try to see if he can see any ships on the horizon when he was suddenly pulled. He screamed his way through the whole trip down into the sewer system and landed with an 'oomph' in the shallow water of what looks like... a well?]

... You've gotta be freakin' kidding me. There is no way this isn't a dream. Come on Stiles, wake up.

[With that, he starts slapping at his cheek hard to try and make that waking up thing happen. He's so focused on this that he doesn't notice the other person that was dropped down here with him right away. But what he does notice is the hair that moves around his ankles and he leaps with a screech.]

What the hell was that!?
iii. the boardwalk
[Well, he escaped, and now the only clothes he owns in this place are covered in sewer water. He's not going near water for a while unless it's to clean this crap off. And all of his attempts to wake himself up have failed. Also, he can read just fine and his fingers are still only ten in count... toes too.

Either way, he's pretty beat from all the "excitement" and he's decided to just take a breath and get something to eat so he can finally go through this bag of junk he was given. He parks his damp ass on the edge of the boardwalk with a donut and a warm cider as he looks out at the ocean with a suspicious and unhappy squint. Then he notices a bonfire has gone up nearby on the beach and hops down to go sit by it and dry off, and get warm.

One of the natives comes over to start prattling on about ghost stories and he sarcastically scoffs when they ask if he knows any.]
What is this? Summer camp? Are we gonna sing kumbaya and make some dinky friendship bracelets next? Thanks but no thanks, Jason Voorhes.

[The Trenchie frowns and warns him about ghost stories and living them and he barks a laugh. Again, a very sarcastic and slightly manic laugh.] Oh, oh man. That's a good one. Top notch comedy.

[Then he grins with clenched teeth and gives the Trenchie a mocking thumbs up. Finally, the guy leaves him alone, but maybe he's about to be bothered by you...]

[damn, check out this cool motherfucker with a sword on her back. no, not gideon nav, the other one. the one that's walking up to gideon nav and looking very much like she doesn't belong in victorian era anything. her katana is loosely sheathed over her shoulder, she's got a light jacket on, and most of her limbs are covered. just 'cause she's a robot doesn't mean she can't get cold.]

Frosty cougar sounds like what I'm gonna be in a couple years. Sweet shades. [she sizes up the butch in front of her appreciatively. if this is what the boardwalk brings every month then she should probably head over more often.] What's your history with face paint that you can't catch a break?

He had been...brought. It was a curious phenomenon, one he wishes he had more time to examine. He is, to his mind, a scientist first and foremost. He had been pursuing an unusual energy signal when he had been...moved.

The process was disorienting, but he has survived worse. Emergency Temporal Shift, for a start - to escape a collapsing Dalek Empire. He is barely aware that his life support transport has activated its repulsors, keeping him floating above the water. And then the Swallowing happens. That, in a long and dark life, is a first. He holds his single hand over his head as the creature swallows him whole, gritting his teeth in anticipation of pain - which doesn't come.

How very interesting.

But the problem, of course, is now everyone else's. Because whatever creature this is, whatever other creatures there are...he is now here. And with time, and with patience - he can use this biomass. Use whatever tools there are. Simple tools become complex ones, and complex ones become his creations - and eventually...those become his Daleks.

He floats down the creature's oesophagus, the blue lights of his repulsors heralding the arrival of a being who should be, by all rights, long dead. Who looks dead. And in oh so many ways, is worse than the Pthumerians ever could be.

"Fascinating," comes a voice kept functional by a vocoder - slightly alive and slightly mechanical. "The creature is vast," he continues, addressing the nearest person as if this is merely a scientific problem. "All of these biological structures are too large to function properly, and yet...it lives. Whatever powers it allows the flow of blood and other vital fluids through structures inappropriate to the task."

1. The Beach
[It takes her awhile to find legs again, after spending who knows how long in a body completely foreign to her. How do Sea Creatures manage in a body like that? she finds herself wondering, now her full and naked rabbit self laying out on the beach, struggling to find her footing. And when she does manage to pick herself up, she stumbles a bit, falling face-first back into the sand and grumbling to herself.]

How did I manage in a body like mine?

[Well, she's found her voice at least. And, pathetically crawling forward, she reaches for a bag, one at random and nearest within reach, shivering a bit from the wet and cool air, hoping to find something to cover herself up with.

But, when she opens the bag (managing to sit up on her knees), her long white ears droop.
]

Oh...this is someone else's, isn't it?

[It might be, or the standard welcome bag contents have thrown her off and it is actually hers.]

2. Boardwalk
[Haru's warming herself up with a nice hot apple cider, tucking away the thoughts of death and reincarnation back into that same pocket she tucks all her bad, existential thoughts away.

She's waiting her turn for some face paint, still not really believing the superstition surrounding it (despite...everything that's gone on) but, hey if it works, she could honestly use the extra help to protect herself from hungry beasts. In fact, it kind of reminds her of the Odd Souls festival in a way, and she finds herself feeling homesick. The first time she's felt that way since arriving here.

Mainly because loneliness and being alone isn't all that foreign to her.

But pushing it aside, she watches a fellow Sleeper who's getting their face painted before her, black eyes bright and curious. Is the paint fur friendly like it is back home?
]

3. Swallowed
[Well, that was a mistake. She had stupidly went back out to find something she might have lost on the Farther Shores, and a wave had crashed over her and--

The truth is, this was always going to be her fate, wasn't it? Some helpless rabbit, having to struggle to keep herself up and treading at the surface, feeling that all-too-familiar sense of dread when a predator lurks unseen just beyond her poor lack of sight. There was a time she had been resigned to this fate, but now, even with her fur and clothes heavy and creating drag in the water, in her fast-beating heart Haru knows it's a fruitless endeavor but she has to try.

But then it's all a blur. Small hands scrabbling against smooth white stones as the water rises up from beneath her, fingers trying to find hold against something red and feeling like flesh. In the past her body would have locked itself up, instinctively resigned herself to this fate, but instead she keeps fighting until it's too much, and the light disappears as the creature closes its mouth.

Ah, well this is it. Maybe next time I'll turn into something stronger.

And finally resigning herself to her fate, she simply just falls the rest of the way down, until, instead of actually dying, she lands.

Right on top of another poor soul also trapped in the belly of the beast. At least she's small and considerably light.

Nothing pleasant. [The man to his right stays where he is with his hand on the wall. In the dim light his fiery red hair looks like a wet mane spread over the canvas of his dark coat.

Something is moving in the water. He can't hear it but the feeling of something brushing against his thighs is difficult to miss. His vision glows but it's so faint he can't use it to see. Diluc raises his fingers up but not flame blooms.

He shifts, turning his gaze on Stiles as stone scrapes on stone. He jerks his head up to peer up and for Stiles it gives him a clear view of something staring at him from across the space they're trapped in. Something with fury in its eyes.]

[He might hear a closed-mouth chuckle, deep in someone's throat, and if Stiles should follow the sound, he'll find himself looking at a tall blond man in a black Victorian suit topped with a black leather frock coat and eyes hidden by blue-tinted glasses. He's sitting on a wooden box, nursing a cup of warm cider, a leather satchel by his feet.]

[The boardwalk seems just as pleasant in October as it was in September. It still seems to have an air of celebration as people gather to welcome the new Sleepers to shore, even though there's a chill that seems to have developed since her arrival the previous month. It's not terribly unpleasant, and easily warded off with a cup of hot cider.

Willow has no intention of going anywhere near the water, but she's content enough to stroll along the boardwalk, watching for any newcomers she might recognize. She doesn't deliberately approach Gideon, but she still grins at the explanation and the greeting all the same.]

[If Owen knew any better, he probably has roamed around these shores for quite some time. Just not as a human. Everything feels out of place. From the way he walks to the way his words whispers between his lips. The world in front of him is still entirely new. He looks like an entire wreck. His new robes drape over his pale and svelte frame, but he kicked up plenty of dirt along the way. Even his hair is done up all messy like he rubbed a towel against it and never looked back.

Frankly, he’s more occupied with the way the bonfire is keeping him warm. He blankly stares into the flames, holding a single doughnut in his hands. Is he completely lost? Or were there familiar faces around here?

Owen’s eyes are getting heavy. He’s tired. The doughnut in his hands drops and rolls off in the sand. Damn. That was a good doughnut, too.]

[Should he be lurking around the beach? Probably not. Not with this intent, anyways. He's pretty sure you're not supposed to camp in the place people wash up from Squidification. But no one's chased him off yet! And he can't set anything on fire!]

[But Melius is also pretty sure you shouldn't be poking squid-people with swords, either. Maybe.]

[He has a bucket full of questionable shellfish. Adorned with seaweeds and something that looks like a coral and a mushroom had a terrible child. But he dumps that out. Immediately. And holds the bucket out to the woman.]

Um. Here. For the um. The person.

[As if to help explain himself, he points toward the hapless, flopping squid.]

[ being swallowed alive... it wasn't something she'd anticipated this morning. it wasn't really something she'd prepared for at all, in fact. and honestly? she's glad she didn't. the sensation of facing something greater than she could have possibly comprehended, the feeling of being overpowered, the realization that she'd lost-

well. she's still feeling a bit giddy.

maybe that's why she's taken her time, exploring the guts of the thing that won instead of immediately eviscerating her way out. and maybe that's why, when she realizes someone is falling her way-

she reaches up at the last moment, snagging haru out of the air and rolling to the ground with the impact. as they come to a stop, lappland ending flat on her back with a rabbit tucked safely to her chest, she has the good graces to ask:
]

Just felt like dropping by, huh?

[ ...good lord, that was a bad one. ]

Hm? [ lappland barely gives melius a cursory glance. he's a fighter, yes, but he's not a killer. hardly a threat, as far as she's concerned. so she reaches out, taking the bucket with her free hand... ] Ah, thanks.

[ ...and setting it by her side before turning back to the squid. ]

You're comfortable like this, huh? [ slowly, with a great deal of intent, she uses the hilt of her sword to flip the squid onto its side. ] There. See? You can't do anything like this. [ another prod. ] Does it make you want to stop me? [ prod. ] Can you feel yourself reaching out? Trying to grab my throat?

[ this lady, uh... she's got some problems, huh? ]

WHALE cw: gonna be gore in this one!

[ It has been about a month since Alice made her grand entrance into this land. Since then, she has been idly squidding around and minding her own business and now, as is the case for a squid now and then, is inside some sort of... big fish? Sea cow? She stopped being a squid around that time but nevertheless, she is in here, and has been making the best of it.

This is not her first rodeo. Sometimes you just end up in a weird dark place full of flotsam. She has figured out the technology known as "lantern" and for the last week and a half of September has been living on half a ship stuck midway down the throat. Sometimes neat stuff lands on it, sometimes that stuff is a people. (There's another girl here but she can have her own toplevel, just because they are sisters doesn't mean they have to share everything!!) There are some fun and exciting aspects to living on a big splinter in a massive deathbeast but. She's getting kind of bored. Thank the Abyss some other fool has just fallen in! ]

I have two questions: can you cook, and what is outside of the big dumb fish right now? The first one is most important; the wall here is made of raw meat and nobody here can do anything tasty with it.

[ To be diplomatic, here. Alice definitely looks like somebody who has been chewing on gross greasy whale walls for sustenance, and also like somebody who has the occasional unexpected short bath when the beastie opens its mouth. ]

BOARDWALK

[ By some means or the other, our heroine has arrived ashore, put herself in at least some semblance of order, and is eager to consume something, anything, that is not extra-fresh fish flesh. She has had enough of being in the mouth of something else, she must establish dominance. ]

Today, everything is to go into my mouth!

[ She is going to bite. Everything. She sees. These creepy pumpkin faces? Hard to puncture, slippery, taste isn't too bad. Candy apples? Oh, this is a LIE, there is a deceptive soft layer under the sticky one. Frankly, the stickiness isn't ideal. Good crunch, though. Fake ghosts? Yeah, she can chew the daylights out of a fake ghost, take that...! She does draw the line at biting complete strangers but she is definitely eyeing some of the people with striking face paint. ]

[This isn’t the first time she’s been held tight to a wolf’s chest, and it probably won’t be the last.

But, to Haru, who’s disoriented from the fall and honestly appreciative of this fellow…meal’s (?) catch, this person doesn’t quite register as a wolf. She’s a human, right? No, that can’t be right…
]

Your ears… [Is the first thing she says as she turns over in this girl’s arms, thankfully missing the bad pick up line of sorts.

She squints, then remembering just what had happened moments prior, shock still not setting in due to just frank disbelief:
] Wait, I’m not dead?
fusrodaaaah: (Uhhhh? Yes?)

[He blinks. The sort of facial expression of someone whose brain just went off into medieval BSOD for a minute there. No... no, the bucket is for the squid. The squid person.]

[His hands flutter a bit. Like he's trying to make the words come out of his mouth and failing miserably. Or like he's trying to pick up the squid without touching the sword.]

It's - um. You. Maybe you should. Put them in the bucket? Or uh. Back? Back in the ocean?

Before it... gets poked. Too hard.

i. arrival

[Comparatively, this isn't the weirdest thing that's ever happened to Saxsice -- but it's pretty darn close. She's used to changing her form, but she's always ended up in the form of a majestic, graceful white wolf.

Not...a squid. Nothing majestic about a squid.

Eventually she changes back, though, and now there's a completely nude, blonde woman sprawled out in the sand, spread-eagle. Let's not think about all the crevices that sand is getting into, as we speak.

If anyone approaches, Saxsice will abruptly jerk up and blindly swat at them, grumbling in a startled, snorty way:
] Jeeeeesusfuck get off'a me!

ii. boardwalk

[Once she's got her bearings a bit, Saxsice sets off for the boardwalk, following her nose. She hasn't put together yet where to get money, so she resorts to a tried and true method -- cute puppies always get handouts, right?

Well. "Cute puppy" is a bit of a misrepresentation. Her animal form is an enormous wolf, with snowy fur and luminous orange eyes. Not exactly a cute family pet.

But she approaches with her tail wagging and her ears pricked, so she's clearly friendly, right? She just wants some of that caramel apple you're chomping on. Just a little bite. You won't even miss it, promise.
]

iii. swallowed

[So you've been consumed by an amorphous, enormous sea creature and landed on some sort of fleshy internal island. Bummer, dude.

At least you aren't alone! Saxsice is there, wrapped in a bit of moldering sail and pacing the edge of the stomach-island, eyes on a rotting ship that rises from the sea of stomach acid. The appearance of another person gets a brief sideways look, then a wave.
]

S'up, Jonah? Feel like helpin' me commandeer a ship? [Maybe she's going to try and steer the ship out of the monster? Maybe she just...wants to stand at the wheel and call people "scurvy dogs". Anyone's guess, really.

(No, it isn't, the answer's always "pretend to be a pirate".)

Hm? Never met a lupo?

[ lappland watches haru with the intent gaze of... well, not a carnivore, actually. more like a dog that's just seen a mailman for the first time. there's intrigue, for sure, and there's a fair bit of amusement there with it. but she doesn't seem to particularly view her new catch as food or a fight.

probably for the best. lappland's pretty sure this - cautus? or something like it, at least - hasn't ever even held a gun, let alone a blade. there's no fun in that.
]

Not yet. [ there's an odd merriment to the wolf girl - "lupo," she'd called herself - and her voice, a certain euphoria that hides behind each word. ] There's no acid up this far. Still, if you lie down and wait, I'm sure it'll come eventually...

[ sorry, haru. your savior is a weirdo. ]

Hey!

[Luz had to naturally fight an urge to hug a full on rabbit person, who looked strangely fluffy, and instead hand her a robe. She knew this was the day the new people washed up and figured that it might be nice to be extended the hospitality she hadn't had for herself].

I mean, maybe? What would you expect in your own?

[Luz is relaxing for the moment, chewing on a caramel apple, when she hears the whine.

Her OWN omen, a wolf named Tempest, gives a low growl, a warning in case said wolf has any ill intentions toward her charge. Luz, however, is more than happy to give up her treat].

Oh, hey, another wolf. Now, are you an actual wolf or do you just turn into one?

1) ARRIVAL
A) BOARDWALK
["Any port in a storm" was a familiar phrase. An oft-used one, too. But it never seemed so apt as it did now. It's extremely lucky he knew how to swim, how to keep afloat with minimal effort. It paid off - his feet hit sand, and soon enough, clothing, assistance, and explanations came. Some island called Trench. No one having heard the name Tir Fradi, whichever way you wanted to spell the damned thing, or any of the guilds and factions warring in the world.]

[Odd place. But there's a view of the sea. And for that, he can't complain.]

[The captain explores easily enough. Looking around the boardwalk. Gathering what explanation he can, where he can. It's not until he hears about the face painting that he cracks a lopsided grin. Oh, but Siora would love this...]

Believe I'm a bit ahead in that area. [Is what he tells the well-meaning local, and any other Sleeper in earshot. There's humor in his voice, in the rough accent of it.] My marks don't have a habit of coming off. Figure that should keep me safe enough?

B) NETWORK > video; un: fornaut
Greetings.

[Yeah, he still sounds like a pirate. And the face on the screen is literally covered in tattoos. Lines, whorls, dots. The only place they're not is on his eyelids. Somehow. He's even got an ear piercing.]

I've been told this is the way to send a message on this island. I'm looking for whoever can point me to an available ship - seems I've lost my way.

If any of my brothers or sisters be hearing this, Captain Vasco, requesting passage on your vessel.

2) WELL WELL WELL
Steady!

[There's a firm hand reaching to grasp a newly... splashed down individual's. Attempting to haul them to their feet. It's not an easy thing, being waist-deep in an underground pool. Thankfully, working in a watery environment is almost second nature. Plant your feet, brace against the water - expect to lose your footing - ]

Up with you, now! I've got you. Wouldn't do to drown...

[He'll keep hold of whoever else happens to be here until they've gotten their feet under them.]

Word of advice - wouldn't try climbing the walls out, were I you. Can't seem to find a damned handhold.

[ melius's hands move just a little too close, a fraction of an inch closer than the wolf would like, and lappland responds in kind. her movements are small, hardly grandstanding or making a scene: she shifts one blade a tiny bit towards him, clicks it out of its sheath barely a centimeter, turns it to be more level on the draw with him.

to someone completely inexperienced with combat, it might not even register as a threat display. but lappland's fairly sure her read was right: he's fought enough people to see the signs for what they are. she grins, serrated teeth showing cleanly from top to bottom, and speaks with that same merry tone.
]

Hey, hey, now. Our little friend swam all this way, didn't they? You wouldn't disrespect all that effort, would you?
