[Varian's really not doing great right now, his eyes are wide and unfocused- he could be considered to be staring at the burning crabs, but he's looking somewhere beyond that. Panic is well and truly setting in, the air still hot around him, like something teetering on the verge of exploding.
Varian doesn't understand how he created fire but he knows he doesn't want to keep doing it. He just wants to push this as far in the back of his mind as possible and not think about it at all. He's looking desperately for an exit, a way out of the caves and more importantly, out of this situation.
He catches a shaft of light and points at it.]
Look! We- we can get out there! That's gotta be better than this. [There's a pleading, desperate shift to his tone.] We- let's just go. We can move faster than the crabs. You... you just need to help me there, okay?
[ Well, it's better than Wu's plan, which was to make Varian firebend, but clearly that isn't happening any time soon. He lets out a cry as a crab starts climbing up his arms, and he throws them off with as much strength as he has before he grabs Varian by the arm and tries to haul him up with his arm around his shoulders. ]
We can try! We can, we can get there. We can get out--
[ The panic isn't ebbing at all. In fact, it's growing, because the fire was a boon, it was hope, and now Wu is pretty sure they're going to get eaten by carnivorous crabs and he's not ready for that.
He holds back a shaky sob, doing his best to drag Varian up-- but that's when something strange happens, at least for Varian.
Wu's being taken back to the last time he had to escape, with little hope of succeeding, when he was hurried out of the palace in Ba Sing Se the day that Zaheer killed Queen Hou-Ting. He was terrified then, too, and trying his best to be quiet, to hold back his tears, to do what the Dai Li told him and get out of the city. The scene flashes in Varian's mind, from Wu's perspective of being shushed and hidden. He peered around them to see chaos, to see flames licking ancient tapestries, to hear shouts of "the Queen is dead!"
Then the scene abruptly ends as Wu takes another shaky breath ]
[He hopes that's enough to bolster Wu out of this, because the trying to use powers he doesn't understand and barely can accept exist at all is definitely not going to work out for them.
Wu might be feeling panicked and helpless, but Varian catergorically can't survive this without Wu's help. He's leaning on Wu heavily to get up at all, and that's when... things change. Suddenly they're not in the cave. They're somewhere else. Panic and dread fill the air, making it thick enough to taste. The fire is terrifying, as are the hushed voices. The Queen is dead.
And then suddenly they're in the cave again and Varian raises he's been standing there, dumbfounded. He nods trying to get his leg under him, trying his best to help Wu to get them along. He wants to ask about the vision, but survival first, as they move quickly towards the light that might offer them a way out. The gap looks big enough anyway. Thank god.
The Queen is dead keeps rolling over and over in his head but he tries to focus so hard on this. Survival first. Survival first.]
[ Wu repeats it over and over again breathlessly, egging himself on as he supports a lot of Varian's weight over his shoulders.
He'll get them out of here. Varian can't firebend, of course he can't! He's from a different world, a world with alchemy, not bending. Wu has two legs and is mostly unhurt, save a few bruises. He can get them out of here. Varian is relying on him!
They manage to get decently far, but the clicking is following them, and Wu tries to move faster, pulling Varian with him. ]
Come on, come on--
[ There's the grey light of the outdoors coming through a break in the rock wall, and Wu aims for it. But before they're close, the crabs start to catch up with them, one crawling up Wu's leg, another on Varian's. Wu yelps, trying to kick it off, unbalancing the pair of them ]
[He really is trying to keep Wu's faith in himself going. They kind of need it if they're going to survive this cave. Both Fern and Mako will go absolutely ballistic if they both die immediately after being reborn after all.
He stumbles along as best he can- thankfully he's skinny and short and weighs almost nothing, but the same could be said for Wu. This is now twig relying on another to get around. As the crabs attack their legs, Varian lets out a surprised yell, moving a hand to try and sweep them away.
More fire licks out of his fingertips and it definitely hits his leg and he winces- he only has the one leg left, he really can't afford to burn it. However, he's surprised to find no pain in his leg and when he glances down again, there's no burn marks, just a couple of scorched crabs on the floor.]
[ It's a breathless cry and Wu concentrates for the next few steps, trying to get them out. He sees the flash of flames, but he can't think about it right now. He can't rely on Varian's inexplicable firebending to get them out of here. He has to rely on himself. And his self has never been the most reliable.
His muscles are tired, his legs and shoulders aching from carrying Varian's weight, and he lets out a cry as they finally make it over the threshold of the cave and stumble into the sand.
Wu collapses immediately, falling to his knees in the sand. He can't support them anymore, his arms and legs giving out.
He can only hope that the crabs don't follow them. ]
[Varian is very glad for the boost from Wu. Because like it or not, there's no way in holy hell he would get out of the cave on his own. Once Wu falls to his knees, Varian kind of rolls off him to lay on the flat of his back, catching his breath. His brain is still screaming about all the fire- but real tiredness is starting to seep into him. The sort of to-the-bone ache akin to working in the fields, bringing in the harvest all day.
Afer a second though, he does speak, because it's important: ]
[ Wu pants, his chest heaving, trying to regain his breath. He's trained in the last few months, so he isn't quite as winded as he would have been, but he still isn't much bigger than Varian, and carrying his weight was a strain on his body. It lets him know that loud and clear.
He falls back, sitting in a crumpled heap on the sand, his eyes skipping to the cave, but the crabs seem to be scared to leave it. ]
Yeah, yeah, glad we're, um, not dead! Really glad. Wow.
[He is very glad for this heroic sacrifice, Wu. He will not forget it in a hurry. Varian's still flopped on the beach- he'll attempt moving in a minute. Once his body stops screaming at him.]
I am really glad we're not dead, too! That- hah- that would have been a terrible way to start our lives in this new world, huh?
There are scary crabs and a scary ocean and...whatever that whole thing was. ["That whole thing" being the powers they both apparently have now which Varian does not like one bit, no sir. ] I don't know about you, but I'm feeling kinda cheated right now. We were not warned about the murder crabs.
[He groans, finally pulling himself up onto his elbows to look around them, squinting off in the distance.]
I think I can see people further up the beach? [He turns his attention back on Wu, now the initial panic is over.] Are you okay? No terrible injuries?
Or go home. Or...stay in the town while it fell apart, I guess? Though... neither of those options was something I wanted.
[So now he's here. Having the most ungrateful entrance to a new life ever. He nods, glad that Wu is unharmed, at least. That's... well, a small victory, after all that.
Ah. Right. The fire. Varian, sits upright, curling his one leg inward in a vain attempt to get some modesty back (though knowing he sure can't hide all the scar that little his chest) raising his hands to stare at them like they're an unfamiliar part of him.]
I don't- I don't understand how. It doesn't...make sense? I'm not a firebender. I don't even come from your world, why would I suddenly have firebending. And you...you did something weird too. I...saw something. With your aunt?
I tried to go home. I did go home! But then I was brought back.
[ Wu sighs, dropping down next to him. For his part, he doesn't mind being naked. It is a little weird, but it's the least of his worries right now. He eyes flicker over the scars, then away, as he tries to parse those last words ]
My aunt? You, you saw her? Uh, that's weird. That's really weird. How did you see her?
You were...brought back? How? This doesn't feel like a dream, so I'm guessing you didn't get here by falling asleep?
[He kind of expected those who'd chosen home over the door to be able to stay there. It wasn't fair if that was ripped away from them. Everyone was entitled to their choice, he thought.
His frown softens.]
It- it was. I...or I guess you? Were being rushed out of this palace. Everything was terrifying, and you were being hushed a lot. And...people were shouting that the queen was dead.
No, no. I was brought back to Deerington. It was pretty spooky, really. Everything was totally normal, back home, but then... then I started seeing deer everywhere, and Mako and I were brought back by an antler. I came here through the ocean, which was also very spooky.
[ Everything is spooky. He sighs, shaking his head. It's all too much ]
Oh-- you say that? I'm, oh. How? I, yes. That, that must have been after my Auntie... [ Was killed, but he's more stuck on how did Varian see that. He's seen other people's memories before, in Deerington, and people saw his, but it was different, he was in the memory, after touching those flowers. ] You didn't touch a flower, right?
Oh. That's... not what I was expecting. I thought those that chose to go back could at least...stay there. [Kind of rude they got dragged back anyway, he hums softly.] That does line up with something Dipper was saying on the beach though. He said home didn't feel right for any of them anymore? Like... they didn't belong there.
[He shakes his head. No. Definitely no flowers.]
Only you. It's... I mean, Deerington has shared memories before, so I figure it's that. But there's usually more to it than just...touching someone?
I knew it before I went back-- but I can't say that I wasn't a little disappointed. [ He sighs softly ] No, it didn't feel right, not really, but it never really did. I had to go back and be the King again! I almost forgot how.
[ He grimaces, then shifts up to his feet, offering Varian a hand ]
I think I can get us back now. I don't want to sit here in case something else attacks us...
Um. I'll try not to show you anything else? I don't know. I don't know how it works. I don't know why you would have seen that! That was a really awful day. I'm sorry, Varian.
But you and Mako remembered each other, right? I- I mean obviously you remembered each other, but you remembered each other like you are here, right? Together? [He knows Dipper had no issues with memory loss, but that's not to say others wouldn't have been affected differently. He smiles, a touch sadly. ] I'm sorry it didn't work for you, you've got it in you to be a really good king. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't really glad to see you again.
[He's grateful for the help, using Wu to help himself to his foot-sorry, buddy, he's gonna be leaning on you still.]
Thanks. And don't worry about it. I... I have a feeling it's probably just Deerington weirdness. Or...wherever we are weirdness. [Just what they need, extra weirdness, yeesh. He exhales slowly.] It's been a really awful day.
Yeah, yeah! We remembered everything. Which was kind of funny because we maybe sort of kissed in front of everyone when they still didn't remember everything? Bolin was really confused.
[ He laughs thinly, hauling Varian's arm over his shoulder as they start their slow trek toward the boardwalk ]
I-- thank you. It was hard, because I didn't really want to go home. I don't want to have to be a king! But it would have be so irresponsible not to try. I had to try.
[ He lets out a sigh, hanging his head ] Either way! I'm sorry. If I showed you that, I didn't mean to. I, it really has been an awful day!
That's good. I'm glad that you remembered everything. I know how important that was for both of you. [He laughs softly.] Woooooow, I bet it did! I would have loved to have seen his face.
[He's glad for the assist, if he can get to a bench...well, life will be a little easier. Not great, but easier. ]
I know, and that's what makes you a good king. You did what was right for your subjects, no matter what you wanted for yourself. You put them first. Even if that didn't work and you still ended up here, you were willing to give up everything for them, and that...that means a lot.
[He wishes Fredric was half the king Wu was. Corona would have been a different place if that was the case. He'd have led a very different life. ]
It's not your fault. It's obvious you had no control over it. No harm, no foul. I won't hold it against you.
It was pretty hilarious. And mortifying. And the teasing! You know Korra and Asami are his exes, right? And they were right there.
[ Wu's face flushes hot just thinking about it. He's not embarrassed being with Mako, not at all, but it was still embarrassing to be so emotional in front of people he respects so much ]
Ah... thanks. I'm glad you think so. I'm really trying! Or I was. I want to be a good King while I am one. Or was one? It's all very confusing. But my family, they never really did right by our people, and I want to change that.
I guess the other me will do that now.
[ His eyes scan the boardwalk. There is in fact a bench near the end where they are, and Wu makes for it. His body feels exhausted from the water, from the fear, from running, from supporting Varian's weight ]
Okay. If you're sure. I, I have no idea how that happened.
Oh wow, I didn't even think about those two being there too! Wow that must have been... and interesting explanation while you waited for everyone else to catch up.
[He's so glad he didn't have to worry about that one. At least choosing to move right on to this world, he and Fern managed to navigate around anything complicated in Corona.]
That's good, though! Knowing that the people before did badly and instead of following suit, doing something different. That's what Rapunzel is doing, too, back home. And yeah, your other you will do fine, and you-you gets to live here. I'm sure you can find your own not-king ways to make a difference to this place, too. I've got faith in you.
[The bench is good, and it'll mean Varian will feel a little less like he's completely relying on Wu to stay upright. It'll give a better chance to take stock too.]
I don't know how I did fire either? Like... I can't do that. I'm not magic. Maybe it's just... weird dream stuff. Or... well, I guess we're not in a dream anymore so weird... this place stuff?
[ Not incoherently trying to remember how to be back home, how to be a King, while Mako tries very awkwardly to explain why they were kissing. ]
Did she? Oh, that's good. But not good, because that means that where your from had the same problems. It's really awful, I just don't think that monarchies are great for the people!
I'll, I'll figure out what to do. Hopefully there will be more time to do things here than there were in Deerington! Do you know what you want to do, now that we're probably not fighting to survive every day?
[ Benches are great, and Wu lets out an exhausted sigh when the reach it, helping Varian to sit down however he needs before collapsing next to him. They are definitely still naked, but that's the least of Wu's concerns right now. His limbs feel like jelly ]
I wasn't a, um. Sea creature before, either. So maybe something really weird happened to us? Or maybe it's another dream! That could definitely happen in a dream!
[It's a little unfair Wu has lost all that, but maybe this is exactly where he's meant to be, Varian thinks. Or...hopes, at least.]
They really aren't, but that's what we're stuck with. She's still ruling, but she has us on her council and trusts us to give her input on things. The kingdom is looking a lot better for it. Better than what her dad did, anyway.
[Fred can take a long walk off a short pier as far as Varian is concerned. ]
I don't know. I still want to help people out here- maybe I'll work out what's needed in this new world and help make that happen? It's what I'm doing back home so might as well... keep up with that.
[Benches are great. Varian is uncomfortable with the naked thing, but he's uncomfortable with everything right now so he's just gonna roll with it. Jeez, everything is exhausting.]
I don't know if this is still a dream, Wu. Everything feels more solid, real? Like - like it felt by the doors.
Wu
I don't- I don't understand!
[Varian's really not doing great right now, his eyes are wide and unfocused- he could be considered to be staring at the burning crabs, but he's looking somewhere beyond that. Panic is well and truly setting in, the air still hot around him, like something teetering on the verge of exploding.
