[He trails off. Looking down into the pile. After a moment, he reaches down into the mess, pulling something out.]

[Holding it aloft.]

Are you serious?

It's better than nothing, anyway.

[And wow, that's... well, that's sure an adorable little backpack. Varian stares at it for a moment, before a smirk crosses his lips.]

Well. I don't think I could pull it off, but if you wanna make a statement here, I'm not gonna stop you.

[shiro2hero]

No, no, hold on... trust me.

[He scrambles down from his perch, fishing around in the bag as he gets there. His expression intensely concentrated...]

[Until he pulls out something folded. He looks at it for a moment, and then beams.]

[Varian watches with unmasked curiosity as Shiro rummages around in the saccharine backpack. He doesn't know what he was expecting to come out of it, but it definitely wasn't that. ]

Oh wow, a walking stick? [Well, that's better than a piece of shitty driftwood!] Do I wanna know how you knew this would be in there?

[shiro2hero]

Depends on how you feel.

[He's unfolding the stick, slash crutch, slash cane. Whatever it is. But his eyes keep drifting to the bag. Avoiding Varian's.]

... Julia Sodder gave it to me. My first year in town.

[droptheious]

[Hmmm, that shifty body language sure is picked up on, but as soon as her name is utter, Varian realises why. His shoulders sag a little.]

Oh. I'm- [sorry about the dead girl he helped end the life of? yeah, that doesn't work] ...are you okay? It's got to be hard to...uh see that again.

[shiro2hero]

I'm fine.

[Really, what else did anyone expect to hear him say? What else can he say? He's here to help Varian. They're all trying to get their feet back under them again.]

[He's got to be fine, still.]

Don't worry about it - does it work for you?

[droptheious]

I don't believe you, but sure.

[He's well aware of what the circular "I'm fine" argument can be like with Shiro, he knows better than to get into it right now.]

But yeah, Shiro. That'll work really great, thanks.

Kind of figured you'd say that.

[Who wouldn't at this point? Besides, Varian's smart enough to see that particular pattern.]

No problem. Just glad we found something.

[droptheious]

[He's seen the dots. He's connected them. ]

Me too! It'll be a lot easier than the driftwood- less chance of splinters anyway. Plus, the fact you've found your adorable little bag means that our items are definitely washing up on this stretch of beach, which increases the likelihood of me finding my leg.
