[ Thank the spirits Yuri did, because Mako's doing his best here but they're in an enclosed space made largely of wood and he can't just let loose like he's used to. At least he can lean on pro-bending, on the kind of quick moves that wouldn't actually hurt an opponent, to land a hit. Yuri slashes, and the fish-thing stumbles and Mako whirls, slamming a fire-laced roundhouse into its gut to slam it into the wood. It shrieks, bleeding profusely, but Mako sweeps fire at it before it can get up and whirls, panting, with his fists still flaming to look at the other one. ]
You wanna try me? Bring it. I'll fry you.
[ The pirate, apparently, does not in fact want to be fried, because it stumbles away, leaving the path to the door clear for them both. ]
[ As if he's moving faster than light, Yuri whips past the fish guy who was in fact fleeing. Well, he could tell his friends. Yuri's used to having to clear a place out, and monsters get no quarter, even ones who seem to have some kind of plan like these ones.
He impales the thing before it even knows what's happening, and Yuri pulls the sword out, whipping back at the other one and stabbing his sword into its throat. It gurgles and collapses back. He twirls his sword with a grin and turns to Mako. ]
[ Mako is definitely not used to routing things. When he's trying to get away, his plan is escape and, well, not usually murder. He avoids murder if at all possible, in fact, and even watching Yuri take out the monsters with that efficient joy is—
Well. He did what he had to, right? Mako's glad this guy's on his side. He tries and fails to hide his grimace at the blood leaking along the boards. ]
Fine–barely got scratched.
[ Okay, yes, he's leaking blueish blood that's smoking slightly and solidifying along his arm, but listen! Things got tough. Mako's had worse, so he ignores it, gesturing for Yuri to follow him. ]
We need to find a lifeboat or something. You know how to sail?
[ Yuri trails after him, glad for the sword in his hand. It's a brutal, crude thing, but it's sharp and metal and that's all he needs. He can take on just about anything with a sword in his hand. ]
But, hell, if it's just a boat and oars, I bet I can figure it out.
[ He spots a set of stairs that must lead above deck and makes for them, getting in front of Mako because he does have the weapon here, and Mako doesn't look so hot right now. ]
There might be a lot of them up there. I dunno how many we can fight, just us, so lets try to spy a boat and get the hell out of here.
[ For a lot of reasons, not least of which is that Mako is still shaky and trying to place where his feet go underneath him, which isn't remotely helped by the way the waves are rocking the ship. This is nothing like being on an airship. It's wilder, like they're at the mercy of the sea: Mako is trying not to think about miles of water all around them, the lack of anything except maybe this ship and something smaller.
Actually getting the lifeboat might be the easy part.
But Mako can't focus that far ahead yet: they have to get the lifeboat first without getting bitten or eaten or whatever else these things have planned, and Yuri is absolutely right. They need to be smart and fast.
Reaching out, Mako grabs his arm before he can pull open the door. ]
Let me look.
[ He doesn't really give Yuri a choice, pulling the door open as quietly as he can and slipping out, calling on all the skills he used to make into games for Bolin. See who can be the quietest, he'd say, and Bolin's eyes would go round with challenge. Mako's pretty sure it kept them alive more than once.
And they are definitely outnumbered. Fish-people crowd the deck, lashing down masts and shouting at each other. Mako feels exposed, crouched against dark wood like this, but there's enough motion up here that they should go unnoticed as they creep— ]
There.
[ On the port side of the boat, in a tangle of rope and the shadow of the mast, is a small wooden dinghy on what looks like pulleys. ]
[ Yuri doesn't exactly like that touch, but he lets it happen because he's not really here to die right now, and they're a team, at least until they're off this ship. Yuri's gaze follows where Mako's gesturing, and he nods, hefting the sword in his hand. ]
Yeah, alright. Now we just have to get there.
[ Yuri's never been the best at plans. He's more of a run in there and chop them down kinda guy. But the odds are pretty stacked against them. He grimaces, shaking his head. ]
I guess we just go. I'll cover you.
[ Since he has the sword, he can fight off at least some of them.
And he can hope and pray that they can figure out a boat. Maybe he should have paid more attention on the Fiertia ]
[ It's not the kind of plan Mako prefers but they're going to be out of time sooner rather than later, and he's not planning to be around when they figure out the cell's been busted open. He has to find someone—has to find Wu, and Bolin, and Asami and everyone else, and that means getting off this ship.
So he grimaces, nods, and meets Yuri's eyes for a second. ]
I'll burn through the ropes. Let's go.
[ It's hard to move quickly and quietly on a boat full of creaking wood and barrels and ropes but they don't have a choice so Mako just... kind of runs, keeping as close to the shadows as he can and one eye on the pirates. Yuri seems competent, but Mako isn't just going to trust a complete stranger with his life. ]
[ Yuri dashes after him, and for a while, it seems like they're home free.
But it's never that easy, is it? When they're halfway to the boat, one of the fish guys sounds the alarm and comes rushing at them. Yuri stops to give Mako time to get ahead to the boat, and parries the fish guy's slash at him, following it up with a kick to the gut. He doesn't yell after Mako to go, but trusts that he will. He doesn't want to draw more attention than he has to while he doesn't have any armor on ]
[ Mako isn't about to miss this chance, even with a little Korra-voice yelling in his head to go help. He'll be more helpful securing their escape, and that's just a fact. Practical, efficient, the way you have to be when you're in danger and outnumbered and weak.
Mako keeps running. He dodges a barrel, pushing all his energy into being as fast as possible, and practically jumps into the boat, whirling around as it goes rocking out over the waves. Desperately, he lunges at a rope to pull himself back, grabs it, and whips around with it in-hand to send a burst of fire at a fish-person approaching from the other side. It goes down with a shriek, and Mako's blood pounds.
[ Well, Mako doesn't have to tell him twice. Yuri runs another one of the fish men through and kicks another, launching himself off so he can make a break for the dingey. He leaps up and lands hard in the boat as more fish guys come running after him. It's loud, with the crashing of the ocean and the yells of the sailors, and Yuri looks up at Mako ]
