It's entirely too late for Mako stop the ice melting, so almost as soon as Fern lands, steam puffs up around him as the ice dissipates back into water, sinking back into the sand as Mako skids down into the wet sand beside him. ]
[At least tripping on ice on a beach isn't the worst thing that's happened to him today. Maybe this is a lesson in finally wearing shoes like a normal person?
Nah, this is a freak coincidence and Fern is groaning as he pushes himself up.]
I'm okay, I'm okay. [He's noticing the steam now, and his brows knit together in confusion.] What the heck was that?
[ If Mako's red ears aren't answer enough to that question, his clear concern and guilt probably are. He offers Fern a hand to help the rest of the way, worry churning his gut. ]
Me. Sorry. I don't know what's—I can make ice now. Need to figure out how to control it.
[Whyyy are your ears red, Mako? Is that embarrassment? Is Mako seriously embarrassed? Fern is pretty sure that is not allowed, because Mako is a cool guy who always has his shit together.
He takes his hand and (carefully) climbs to his feet, bewildered.]
You make ice?? But isn't that like, the opposite of fire? [He remembers what happened when Flame Princess and Ice King fought, and he looks concerned.] Are you gonna explode if you can do both?

[ He is absolutely embarrassed. He is a grown-ass firebender and he should be in control of his powers and definitely not freezing his friends to things. This entire thing sucks. It's one thing to be completely at the mercy of your environment: it's another thing to be completely at the mercy of your own body on top of that.
Luckily, he's very good at shoving down his instinctual fear and gritting his teeth through it. ]

[ Mako is pulled from his worry and fear, stopped short by that question. He actually has to think about it—it's been a day, and a lot has happened, there were boats and pirates and crabs and whirlpools—but no, he definitely didn't... do that. ]
Why would I put a sketchy crown on my head? I don't know what's happening, but believe me, this is not a firebender thing. Benders get one element unless they're the Avatar, and we already have an Avatar.
[It's utterly ridiculous, but Fern is taking this very, very seriously. He's seen firsthand what the crown can do, and the last thing anyone needs is for it to show up here and mess with someone's mind and then before they all know it they're all giant kidnapped ice cubes.]

At least Fern's questioning pulled him out of his confusion, let Mako settle a little bit more. Ice or no ice, they're here, and he has to deal with the reality in front of him, which means answering Fern's question as honestly as he can, even if Mako hates it. He huffs, his arms crossed, his shoulders hunching defensively. ]
...no. I'm not. I've been a bender since I was born, and nothing like this has ever happened. It's probably whatever this place is doing. Related to— [ Mako waves a hand in the direction of the ocean, vaguely indicating the whole squid thing he isn't ready to put into words. ]
Anything weird change for you? I know I'm not the only one. Ruby froze herself solid earlier.
Fern's gaze moves back up to Mako, and he nods slightly. Right, yeah, this wouldn't be the first time a world has messed with a Sleeper's body, and the squid thing....
At the question, Fern shifts his weight from one foot to the other. There is something, a small thing, nothing nearly as big as icing over the beach.]
[ Ah, but Fern is saying this to a detective, and a detective who is maybe a little desperate not to be talking about all the things that have been wrong with him since he washed up on this beach, which means he is going to latch onto the smallest possible indication that something has changed. ]
[Curse your investigative skills, Mako, and your intent to get away from your own problems!!
Fern frowns, looking down at his hands. He isn't going to hide any of this information from Mako, but talking about it makes him a little uneasy thanks to Varian's concern.]
Uh, well, when I've broken plants off of me I've... sparkled. Which isn't normal. It doesn't hurt or anything, but Varian thought it was a big deal, so.... [So it's probably not something he should just ignore.]
[This is Fern, so even if it was objectively concerning there's a good chance he'd be too irresponsible to see it that way.]
I think so. As far as I've noticed that's just something I do now. [He lifts a hand up, which looks perfectly normal and grassy.] No clue where any of the glitter is coming from, it's just appearing outta nowhere.
[ His hand does look normal, but sparkling is definitely... out of the ordinary.
Oddly, it helps that it's not just Mako. It helps that Fern's having weird things happen too, even if they're on the surface more innocuous. ]
Guess a lot changed between Deerington and... here. I don't know if this is really the world underneath the dream or something completely different. Nothing except the sparkling? And you said only when you pick plants off?
[On cue, a couple of flame lilies sprout on Fern's hat. He doesn't hesitate to reach up and yank the flower off himself, and where the stems break a little poof of sparkles appear.]
Those're the only plants I've seen around so far. I haven't gone off the boardwalk yet, and the beach is pretty bare.
[He hands that flower over, then proceeds to reach up and yank another flame lily off his head to give that to Mako too. A couple of fire lilies proceed to sprout up, so he's just going to repeat the process with those, building Mako a whole bouquet for investigative purposes.
There's a little bit of glitter with every single one of them.]
