[Oscar definitely didn't deserve this and yet this is exactly what he's going to get. Such is life.]
That's a good idea. The sky's so...overcast here. I'm hoping that's...uh, not a permanent feature. It might make it hard to grow plant life here. [He considers.] Fern can always help with that. He can grow something for you to get seeds out of if nothing else.
[Oscar said with the quiet confidence that only a farmhand familiar with rough winters could manage. Whether born from his own experiences or something more, not even he could tell in that moment-- but he knew for certain that he wanted to at least try.]
I've got a good supply of seeds, but I appreciate any help that's offered. We can't rely on Fern or magicked plants for everything. That's not fair to anyone, and puts us all at a disadvantage.
It'll take some time. I'm not convinced the land here is particularly arable. It sure doesn't look that way.
[Varian, after all, grew up on a farm too- there were rough winters and then there was...whatever the hell this place is.]
I guess we'd have to see what the land is like further away from the water and the city. Presumably, there has to be something to work with.
[He snorts slightly.]
Trust me, I wouldn't want him to do everything, he'd wear himself out. Just... a start, y'know? To get everything established. Might as well help each other with the skills we've got, right?
Uhhh, pot calling the kettle black a little there, Buddy.
[He gestures to Oscar's own missing leg. TWINSIES.]
...But I get it, wanting to help. I want to do stuff here too. We all do. Just... try to remember not to push yourself into the ground, either. We need to each other on the straight and narrow on that one.
[Because lord knows, they were both really bad at knowing when to step back and rest.]
Definitely. Seeds are good, it gives us something to work with. At least to try out what'll take or not.
[Twinsies indeed. Oscar let out an embarrassed chuckle, swinging his single leg from where he sat. They totally had the same problem...]
Yeah, I guess you're right. [He admitted sheepishly, pushing his shaggy hair out of his face and once more wishing he had found a tie to secure it with.]
But, with a place like this? I don't feel like we need to act so... so desperately here. Everything back home is probably taken care of-- and, as long as we can like this place? I don't see why we wouldn't stay.
It's just gonna take a little trial and error-- like everything else. I know you're good at that kinda thing.
But yeah, you're right. It feels like we can actually take a breath and...work at an easier pace. For the first time in... well, since I got to Deerington at least. We can take stock, figure it out. It really is like a new life.
[One they could, at least choose for themselves. He laughs a little.]
Ohhhh yeah, I'm an expert at that. It might take a couple of goes, but I'll get it figured out eventually.
[He teased-- he knew better than to expect a minimum of explosions from Varian, but he also hoped that there wouldn't be a need for explosions with gardening.]
At least-- could we try to wait until something is growing before there's explosions? I know some plants that will make a nice salve for burns, so we kinda need that on hand before things get too crazy. My supply of dried bundles can only do so much, you know.
[And, while they could ask Fern-- they needed to get standing by their own strength as well. That would be more important, and more sustainable, in the long term.]
...Since we're starting over, maybe I should look into actual books on this stuff instead of trying to remember everything my Aunt showed me. She's smart, but she doesn't know everything. The plants are probably different here, so that's another thing we're gonna have to research and learn to work with.
[Asking Varian not to explode something is like asking him not to breathe, gosh wow!!]
Hmm they do, I can make salves like that. But you have a good point, we don't know what the flora here can do. If I can get some samples, and assuming by some miracle my lab actually showed up here with me, I could run some tests- figure out what the new flora can do. Then we can work out what's best to try to focus on growing.
...And then figure out the best way to grow them, that's...that's also a thing.
The farm I worked outside Mistral was warmer than Deerington. And this place, I guess.
We'll figure it out. Between Fern and his understanding of plants, my understanding of how to grow plants, your alchemy skills, Dipper's ability to investigate anything, and everything else that the others who came here with us know... We'll get it.
[It wasn't a vow, but a declaration of fact. After watching everyone fall apart as the Dream crumbled-- Oscar himself included-- he knew that they all needed a chance to get in touch with the Earth if they wanted it. Maybe it would help them stay grounded when October came, or through a dark Winter.
He believed in the people, and the possibilities that they all brought to Trench.
Hmm, Old Corona had pretty rough winters, but it still got a lot more sun than this place seems to be getting.
[But Oscar is right, between all of them, they should be able to muddle through this and work out how to make this city something more liveable. If nothing else, they were all too bloody-minded to let it go without a damn good fight. ]
We will. I think we've got a pretty good chance of working this out. We've got this.

[Oscar said firmly, casting a look at Varian.]
You both are the type that takes on too much. Besides-- I stockpiled a ton of seeds over the last year. I'm sure we can get something growing.
...Even the most barren field still can sustain somthing. Wildflowers are better than nothing.
