July Test Drive Meme!

JULY 2022 TDM
Another month, another test drive meme! Our test drive memes are open to anyone interested - regardless of whether or not you join our game!

All Test Drive Memes are game canon. Players can choose to keep their TDM threads canon or not. TDM threads can be used for AC and can be used as your writing sample for your application.

Our TDMs serve as a way to build into the actual lore and worldbuilding of Deer Country and we strongly encourage everyone to enjoy and participate! Current players are always welcome to pull prompts from the TDM to reference on the Network or bring into logs as well as tag out to new characters top-leveling on the TDM itself.

Characters will always be able to actively die during TDMs as this is an extremely dangerous world. You can still have this be game canon! Check out how character death in Deer Country works here.

If you have any questions about the TDM, please ask down below!

STANDARD ARRIVAL
WHEN: August
WHERE: The Farther Shores/The Boardwalk
CONTENT WARNINGS: N/A

You're one of the lucky ones. Your journey is smooth sailing and you wind up exactly where you're supposed to: on the Farther Shores. You grow out of your squid body without a hitch, either with the help of another Sleeper or one of the Wakers, and you get to discover this new world. All new Sleepers might take some time to find their bearings. It might be tricky to remember how to use your body parts the way you're supposed to. You might stumble around the beach or forget how to talk - but don't worry! It'll come back to you sooner or later.

Hopefully, you've found something to wear, either in your Welcoming Bag or otherwise, and can start familiarizing yourself with your surroundings. Maybe you help some other squids out on the beach. Waking up sucks! You feel for the little guys. And hey, maybe you're hoping one of those squids is a good friend...Stranger things have happened.

SEASONAL DETAILS ON THE BOARDWALK

This month has an entire festival dedicated to Mariana. The people of Trench seem to be quite enamoured with her, despite her often cruel and unpredictable behaviors. The festival has gone all out with decorations. The boardwalk will be lined with lanterns in the shape of various sea creatures, such as jellyfish, dolphins, seahorses, and (of course) squids! These lanterns will be lit every night throughout the month and will burn through the night. They are bright beacons to a month that is otherwise becoming more and more gray and chilly as time passes.

The people of Trench are also decked out for the occasion. Blues and greens are the popular color choices for outfits, and many people will even decorate their hair with pieces from the ocean. Whether it's with full headpieces that are worthy enough for mermaids or just something as simple as weaving shells into a braid, everyone seems to have something on them that ties them to the sea. There are stalls set up to help newcomers (or oldies who just want to have some fun) decorate their hair as well and face paint for those who want to go the extra mile.

The festival comes with all sorts of celebrations that can be partaken in at absolutely no cost. There are food vendors, though they seem to be short on seafood this month. Likely it's due to the rough seas with waves so treacherous that not even the most skilled of sailors seems to be able to get out into them. They'll remark on how difficult is must have been to swim to shore in those awful waves. So instead of fish and shrimp, there are other sea-dedicated dishes: seaweed salad, noodle dishes made with seaweed broth, caramelized chicken in a fish and ginger sauce, etc. There are also ocean themed desserts, such as cupcakes with blue frosting shaped to look like a great wave. There are games such as dunk tanks, dart balloons, ring tosses, and other typical carnival entertainment. If you can think of it, it's probably there. At the end of the night, there's often a fireworks display over the rolling waves.

rough seas and high winds
WHEN: Last Week of July, First Week of AugustT
WHERE: Beach and Nearby Oceans
CONTENT WARNINGS: Threat of drowning, severe weather phenomena, Environmental hazards, possible death

For some reason, Mariana is particularly wrathful even as the month begins. Even leaking into the end of the month of July, the sea begins to foam and rage in ways that are almost impossible to imagine. As you stare out int the beachheads, you may see vast waves and surf that would daunt the most professional of surfers. Water crashes into each other in colossal spouts. Waterspouts can be seen as storms occasionally buffet the coastline and just out into the ocean itself. However, the one thing about this chaotic energy is that it is just that, chaotic. One moment the sea may be calm, and the next it is a roiling, seething force out to destroy everyone.

This is, naturally, dangerous for those who are just hapless squids trying to reach shore. They may find themselves inexorably being flung towards sharp rocks and shoals, threatened with being dashed upon the stone near to the coast, or they may find themselves constantly swirling in eddies and whirlpools to the point of near exhaustion. However, they are not the only ones so threatened. Even those on the coast are in near constant danger of being washed right back out to see by an unexpected wave and sudden rip-tide. There are wood planks and other detritus to grab hold of, but it is very much a battle for one's life out there!

The sea's rage, the locals say, is because Mariana is particularly incensed over something that occurred. They do not know what exactly, but many have said that sleepers have felt a particular brunt of this ire lately. For now, it is a game of survival and a constant battle to bring people in safely.

Notes:
-Any natural weather occurrence is possible in the first week of August and last of July. Seemingly impossible combinations may occur (A waterspout in the middle of the eye of a hurricane, almost anything.
-These threats will be upon anyone who is not far enough inland to enjoy the festivities. The beach is not truly safe and sleepers are hustled inland quickly.
-Death is possible, though sleepers who die in the ocean find themselves returning very quickly as squids for some reason, within 24 hours, only to be threatened again before they eventually find shore.

of monsters in the water
WHEN: Throughout August
WHERE: The coast and waterways
CONTENT WARNINGS: Monster Horror, Possibly Getting Eaten, Threat of bodily harm, Unnatural Physiology, Existential Dread

Something has been dredged up from the deep by the storms that rage. It is said that Mariana not only presides over the oceans, but also the most powerful monsters that dwell within the deep. Some of these, it is believed, may be the remains of Pthumerians whose minds and lives were lost during the hard times before, or the spawn of their mating with things other than humans. Whether these rumors are true, eldritch things have begun to emerge from the depths and darkness, things best left unseen.

Throughout the month of August, it is possible to encounter creatures that can only be described as monsters emerging from the water. With every passing storm, another emerges. Some are as large as small kaiju, while others are closer to human size, and each shares very little in common with the others, save for two particular details. The first of these is that they are all aquatic in nature and bear at least a passing similarity to sea monsters of ancient legend or particularly large and dangerous aquatic animals. Giant cuttlefish, Megalodons, Plesiosaurs, Octopi, Sea Cucumbers, Whales, or any of a number of other sea creatures appear to be their basis. The other similarity, however, is that all are hideously and grotesquely deformed. Tentacles, second rows of teeth, great clawed hands and feet enabling them to walk on dry ground, a thousand eyes all over the hump of a hunchback whale all shooting laser beams in the full moon, almost anything seems to be possible, though the changes are all chtonically horrendous in nature.

These creatures are violent, dangerous, and horrifying to behold. Just looking at them jars the mind and threatens to damage one's psyche while they try to understand what they are seeing. Bones are in seemingly impossible angles, bodies moving in ways that they shouldn't. Just looking at them can cause nausea, vertigo or mental breaks, though the danger does not stop there. They are agents of chaos, seeking to destroy mind or body, on a rampage whenever they reach ground, though they do not delve far into Trench beyond the waterways and beach, almost as if they are prevented by something. When one strays too close, an ominous light glows from the tops of the tallest spires in the city and they are inevitably repelled, but until they are killed or sent back to the deep from whence they came, they remain a threat outside of the city.

Ohhh...wow!

[ Akko watches the vase rise in utter awe and wonder. What a cool power - to do that in her own world, she'd need to have a charged wand and focus really hard on not dropping the object. To be able to just touch it and poof! It's floating now! Is really neat.

Also that's it that's the proof, she's a real live superhero, here and now, licenses be damned. She claps her hands together and bounces a bit in her seat. ]

I can't believe I know a real superhero! Well, I know you said you still need a license but I bet you could get one easily.

[ Technically, Akko can't be a professional witch without a license either. Doesn't stop her from claiming she's gonna be one, or that she already is one. A witch in training is still a witch, after all. A lack of a single piece of paper can't stop Akko the Witch from being proud of her chosen path. ]

You seem like a hero already, I just feel it!

[Ochako giggles softly, reaching up to grab the vase and bring it closer to the table before releasing her quirk. The item's weight returns, and her hands bob slightly from the shock of renewed gravity on the object, but she doesn't drop it. She does, however, set it back to its proper place. ...And makes a mental note to pick up some fresh flowers somewhere to put into it, to liven up the place.]

My maximum weight capacity is, eeh...nine tons? I think? But if I get even close to that, I get really, really sick...and I promise there's a lot more to being a Hero than just having a quirk and doing cool things. It's, eh...heheh...really dangerous. And a lot of work. [She won't den the glitz and glamor that she was fed for most of her life about Heroes was turned on its head when she actually started really working. A Rescue Hero, specifically, has it...pretty hard. Natural disasters, wide-scale villain attacks, they're the ones that try to aid those who are in the center of it...or dig out the bodies. Ochako remembers the horrors she saw after Machia's rampage. So many people were in need of help, all crying and screaming. It...it could have haunted her for life, if she were any weaker-willed.] ...I really hope so. I want, more than anything else, to be a proper Hero, so I can help people. Save them, and protect everyone's smiling faces for as long as I can.

And, um...I made a promise to my mama and papa, too. That I'd make a lot of money, and give them the carefree life they deserve. ...I haven't forgotten that. [And she never will. The driving force for her want to be a Hero was, and will always be, her dear mother and father. Ochako loves them most of all.] Hehe, but um...you should show me some magic sometime, too!! I only know witches from my storybooks and shows, and what Luz-san has showed me before!! It must be so cool to have and use magic!!

Ne, ne, do you have a broom? Or is that too callous of me to ask? [Since, uh...it's a pretty huge stereotype...]

That's a good reason to be a hero. Even if it's hard, you have a really kind heart, so I know you can do it!

[ Well, what's life without a little danger. If anything, even not knowing the extent of the horrors Ochako has seen, Akko respects her all the more for facing that danger head on to accomplish her goals. That's what she would do in Ochako's position, she thinks. And her parents must be so proud, too - to have a daughter that fights to protect and uplift the world, and who loves them so much. Akko's parents were good people, who encouraged her to chase her dream and sent her to Luna Nova, but she hasn't spoken to them much since going to school. A mutual feeling of "they're busy I shouldn't bother them", probably.

At the broom question, she laughs. ]

Mhm! It's not callous, every good witch has a broom, right? I did have a broom, but it didn't come with me here. [ A dreamy sigh. ] It's a shame, 'cause I was just getting the hang of flying on it. It's real easy for most witches, but I had...eheh, an 'accident', when I was young. I have to work harder to cast a lot of magic - but I won't let it get me down. I'm going to be a great witch that makes people smile, no matter how much effort it takes!

Oh, maybe I can find a new one and try again! I don't think there was anything special about our brooms at Luna Nova, it was the spell that made them fly.

Eeeh, and I bet you'll become an amazing witch, too!! I bet your magic will make everyone happy!!!

[Oh gosh, what a sweet person... They've only just met, and completely by a happy accident, and Ochako is already giggling and blushing as she finishes up the rest of her lunch. A witch too - another one!! She's definitely going to have to have to ask to see some magic sometime, or something. It would do wonders to help improve her mood, and Ochako definitely needs more friends her age who are girls... Ochako goes shopping a lot, mostly for groceries, but having someone go out to get clothes and other things would be tons of fun.]

Oh...that is a shame. [SHE WANTED TO SEE/RIDE IT. :C] But there are times you can find things from other worlds wash up on the shore, or even in shops for trade here...but they're very expensive. And don't worry - I know someone like that, too, and he's pretty much become one of the strongest people I know!! I'll have to introduce you to him sometime, too!! I think you and Dek--eh...I-I mean, um.

Iz--mmh...Midoriya-kun... [HURRGH, THAT FEELS SO WEIRD ON HER TONGUE. Ochako's way too used to calling Izuku 'Deku', not Midoriya, and Izuku is just. Haha...no. Not without his express permission.] You'd get along.

[ OCHAKO YOU CAN LITERALLY FLY WHAT DO YOU NEED A BROOM FOR!! ]

It's okay, I can find or make a broom myself if it doesn't wash up soon. And I'll even take you for a ride sometime once I'm a little better at it! I don't want to drop out of the sky on you, eheh...

[ Akko finishes her food while Ochako talks about Dek-Iz-Midoriya, giggling a little at how formal she's trying to be. On the one hand, she gets it. Japanese culture was just like that, Akko knows that first hand. On the other hand, she's amongst friends who've lived in England long enough that it's not bothersome to her anymore. ]

Really? You'll have to introduce us, then, yeah! [ She reaches down to fish her wand out of her bag and points it experimentally at the vase Ochako demonstrated with. It's a collapsible metal thing, with a compartment at the bottom that looks like a thermometer, with a little glass window on it. It seems to be empty. ] It's not charged but I wonder if...

[ The vase wobbles as a turquoise light sparks from the forked tip of the wand. It doesn't quite lift, but it's clear the wand is trying to work. ]

Aw, rats. I'll do a whole show for you and your friends when I get this sorted out - would you believe I can turn into animals with magic? My childhood hero used to do a whole magic show where she'd fly around and make illusions and transform into all sorts of things. Once I can do that, you'll have front row seats.

[BECAUSE THEY'RE COOL!!! It's the PRINCIPLE of the matter!]

Uwaaah, really?! You'd really take me on your broom?! Eh, and don't worry about anything falling, ehehe. So long as I'm with you, falling's nothing to worry about. [Ochako holds up her fingers with a wide grin, wiggling them all as a reminder of her quirk. The small, raised pads on each digit are almost like that of a cat's beans, though less defined.] Just stay within reach, of course. I have to be able to touch something to make it float.

[In all honesty, Ochako has amused the thought of asking Izuku if she can call him by his given name - they're certainly close enough friends - or at the least let her call him Izuku-kun or something similar. Even if she changed the meaning of his nickname and Hero name...it still does directly translate to, erm...useless.]

Yeah, if you stay close by my house, I'll invite you both over to dinner on--oooh...! [Stopping mid sentence, Ochako coos, awestruck by the bizarre looking wand, then gasping at the wobble and slight lift of the vase from before. Her eyes grow large, shimmering with childish wonder and excitement.] Kyaaah, how COOL!! That was your magic, right?! And your wand!! Does it need some sort of core - like a phoenix feather, or a unicorn hair, or dragon's tooth or something?! Oooh and you can even turn into animals?! That's amazing!! I haven't seen a quirk like that back home - all the people I know with animal-like features and quirks are just like that permanently, and it's just one animal!

[Mirko has her rabbit ears, tail, and insane leg-power, Hawks has his wings, and Tsuyu has her froggy tongue, ability to breathe underwater, jumping power, and a ton of other crazy useful, froggy powers! Her best friend is the dang coolest, for sure.]

I definitely want to see!! Please, please, please!! I love magic!
