You're one of the lucky ones. Your journey is smooth sailing and you wind up exactly where you're supposed to: on the Farther Shores. You grow out of your squid body without a hitch, either with the help of another Sleeper or one of the Wakers, and you get to discover this new world. All new Sleepers might take some time to find their bearings. It might be tricky to remember how to use your body parts the way you're supposed to. You might stumble around the beach or forget how to talk - but don't worry! It'll come back to you sooner or later.
Hopefully, you've found something to wear, either in your Welcoming Bag or otherwise, and can start familiarizing yourself with your surroundings. Maybe you help some other squids out on the beach. Waking up sucks! You feel for the little guys. And hey, maybe you're hoping one of those squids is a good friend...Stranger things have happened.
SEASONAL DETAILS ON THE BOARDWALK
This month has an entire festival dedicated to Mariana. The people of Trench seem to be quite enamoured with her, despite her often cruel and unpredictable behaviors. The festival has gone all out with decorations. The boardwalk will be lined with lanterns in the shape of various sea creatures, such as jellyfish, dolphins, seahorses, and (of course) squids! These lanterns will be lit every night throughout the month and will burn through the night. They are bright beacons to a month that is otherwise becoming more and more gray and chilly as time passes.
The people of Trench are also decked out for the occasion. Blues and greens are the popular color choices for outfits, and many people will even decorate their hair with pieces from the ocean. Whether it's with full headpieces that are worthy enough for mermaids or just something as simple as weaving shells into a braid, everyone seems to have something on them that ties them to the sea. There are stalls set up to help newcomers (or oldies who just want to have some fun) decorate their hair as well and face paint for those who want to go the extra mile.
The festival comes with all sorts of celebrations that can be partaken in at absolutely no cost. There are food vendors, though they seem to be short on seafood this month. Likely it's due to the rough seas with waves so treacherous that not even the most skilled of sailors seems to be able to get out into them. They'll remark on how difficult is must have been to swim to shore in those awful waves. So instead of fish and shrimp, there are other sea-dedicated dishes: seaweed salad, noodle dishes made with seaweed broth, caramelized chicken in a fish and ginger sauce, etc. There are also ocean themed desserts, such as cupcakes with blue frosting shaped to look like a great wave. There are games such as dunk tanks, dart balloons, ring tosses, and other typical carnival entertainment. If you can think of it, it's probably there. At the end of the night, there's often a fireworks display over the rolling waves.

WHERE: Beach and Nearby Oceans
CONTENT WARNINGS: Threat of drowning, severe weather phenomena, Environmental hazards, possible death
For some reason, Mariana is particularly wrathful even as the month begins. Even leaking into the end of the month of July, the sea begins to foam and rage in ways that are almost impossible to imagine. As you stare out int the beachheads, you may see vast waves and surf that would daunt the most professional of surfers. Water crashes into each other in colossal spouts. Waterspouts can be seen as storms occasionally buffet the coastline and just out into the ocean itself. However, the one thing about this chaotic energy is that it is just that, chaotic. One moment the sea may be calm, and the next it is a roiling, seething force out to destroy everyone.
This is, naturally, dangerous for those who are just hapless squids trying to reach shore. They may find themselves inexorably being flung towards sharp rocks and shoals, threatened with being dashed upon the stone near to the coast, or they may find themselves constantly swirling in eddies and whirlpools to the point of near exhaustion. However, they are not the only ones so threatened. Even those on the coast are in near constant danger of being washed right back out to see by an unexpected wave and sudden rip-tide. There are wood planks and other detritus to grab hold of, but it is very much a battle for one's life out there!
The sea's rage, the locals say, is because Mariana is particularly incensed over something that occurred. They do not know what exactly, but many have said that sleepers have felt a particular brunt of this ire lately. For now, it is a game of survival and a constant battle to bring people in safely.
Notes:
-Any natural weather occurrence is possible in the first week of August and last of July. Seemingly impossible combinations may occur (A waterspout in the middle of the eye of a hurricane, almost anything.
-These threats will be upon anyone who is not far enough inland to enjoy the festivities. The beach is not truly safe and sleepers are hustled inland quickly.
-Death is possible, though sleepers who die in the ocean find themselves returning very quickly as squids for some reason, within 24 hours, only to be threatened again before they eventually find shore.

WHERE: The coast and waterways
CONTENT WARNINGS: Monster Horror, Possibly Getting Eaten, Threat of bodily harm, Unnatural Physiology, Existential Dread
Something has been dredged up from the deep by the storms that rage. It is said that Mariana not only presides over the oceans, but also the most powerful monsters that dwell within the deep. Some of these, it is believed, may be the remains of Pthumerians whose minds and lives were lost during the hard times before, or the spawn of their mating with things other than humans. Whether these rumors are true, eldritch things have begun to emerge from the depths and darkness, things best left unseen.
Throughout the month of August, it is possible to encounter creatures that can only be described as monsters emerging from the water. With every passing storm, another emerges. Some are as large as small kaiju, while others are closer to human size, and each shares very little in common with the others, save for two particular details. The first of these is that they are all aquatic in nature and bear at least a passing similarity to sea monsters of ancient legend or particularly large and dangerous aquatic animals. Giant cuttlefish, Megalodons, Plesiosaurs, Octopi, Sea Cucumbers, Whales, or any of a number of other sea creatures appear to be their basis. The other similarity, however, is that all are hideously and grotesquely deformed. Tentacles, second rows of teeth, great clawed hands and feet enabling them to walk on dry ground, a thousand eyes all over the hump of a hunchback whale all shooting laser beams in the full moon, almost anything seems to be possible, though the changes are all chtonically horrendous in nature.
These creatures are violent, dangerous, and horrifying to behold. Just looking at them jars the mind and threatens to damage one's psyche while they try to understand what they are seeing. Bones are in seemingly impossible angles, bodies moving in ways that they shouldn't. Just looking at them can cause nausea, vertigo or mental breaks, though the danger does not stop there. They are agents of chaos, seeking to destroy mind or body, on a rampage whenever they reach ground, though they do not delve far into Trench beyond the waterways and beach, almost as if they are prevented by something. When one strays too close, an ominous light glows from the tops of the tallest spires in the city and they are inevitably repelled, but until they are killed or sent back to the deep from whence they came, they remain a threat outside of the city.

but the stroking is nice and soothing feeling thus her cries aren't as loud or in anguish. jinx wiggles in an attempt to be closer to vi for her own comfort and it's an very awkward moment as well just like with her swimming. she's not very good at being this.)
no subject
knows she's in there, too - she's never held another sleeper squid before - it's such a vulnerable state to be in, and she tries to tamp down the guilt that maybe she'd caused this - maybe it had been too upsetting - or maybe they were just too close to the ocean and it was that - or maybe it was nothing other than jinx being jinx: unpredictable.
so vi cradles the squid, as if she would a tiny person, a wounded animal - tentacles wrapping around her like a squiddy spidermonkey, which ...the moment she thinks of this she doesn't know whether to laugh or cry. so it's a bit of both as she attempts to gently and quickly descend to a lower ledge, one where the waves have kissed before, and leaving a small pool of water behind in a sunken surface. it's a small, shallow pool, but she doesn't know how long a squidself can breathe air before it needs water, so she wants to make sure both are at the ready.
and she does, stepping one foot in and then both feet - it's only waist deep, and not very wide, and she can only guess at what will soothe her sister's distress - though on some level, maybe the partial immersion in water will help the squid.]
It's either this or my bathtub, and it's a long way to carry you all the way back there. I ...would, though.
[she leans her head forward to rest against where she thinks jinx's forehead might be.]
no subject
jinx squid sorta just sinks to the bottom for a moment; not at all moving but then strangely wiggle-swims over to vi's ankles. in time, she pokes her head out of the water just enough to see her clearly but still in the water enough. it looks as if she is waiting for vi to say something next or do something next.)
no subject
she watches the squid slip beneath and wiggle along the bottom - not quite swimming, but managing to move along, to brush her tentacles against vi's ankles - which elongate just a little before they slacken and slip - before they're tentacles again as if they'd always been tentacles, and she leans into that - her own squid limbs reaching for her sister's - sort of ...petting her hand in comfort.]
It's okay. We can chill here for a while. Unless ...you want me to just go all in and swim around with you in there?
[she's never tried to make the switch purposefully, but she knows it's possible.]
no subject
the suggestion of swimming sounds nice but squid jinx scoots away just a smudge. it looks embarrassed, maybe? to further explain herself, she does swim ahead but then her "swimming" suddenly goes lopsided? it's almost as if she is tripping herself under the water before she tries to go up-right again. a further demonstration how she's not very good at this swimming. it's then she hears "mylo" cackling; it's muffled due to the water but she can recognize his horrible laugh anywhere.)
(squid jinx quickly thrash to look behind her -- there's literally nothing there but it seems like she is addressing someone. her tentacles are flailing in anger gestures before doing some sort of "shoo shoo go away" movements.)
no subject
even with the good parts - it's overwhelming. vi isn't the most well adjusted of people, she's got her issues, but hers are, when she weighs them against what she thinks are her sister's - hers come up short, and with an easier time of shifting the blame if she wants. to silco, to marcus, even to powder, to jinx, if she's honest. none of that is wholly accurate - but it's always been a bit of an easier reach, a shove off when she isn't willing to acknowledge the complexity of ...everything.
the guilt she feels? (her little boo hoo problems) it's nothing compared to powder's. because she'd been powder, then. vi? vi had made (a bad call. and it cost her ...her sister. her freedom. when she digs deeper it maybe cost her more than that. but she's not interested in digging there just now. she cannot begin to imagine the weight of the guilt jinx must feel - a more direct route of blame. the voices in her head that she's seen her talk aloud to - ghosts of that guilt made manifest - and what they whisper? she can only guess at. what she guesses is terrible enough.
so. take that and drop a girl into the ocean. turn a girl into a squid and back again and what do you get.
vi stares into the water as her sister's squidform shakes, flails and points at something unseen. she doesn't know what to do. so she plunges a hand into the water, pointing in the same general direction the jinxsquid 'shoos' at, speaking softly:]
Hey, whatever that is, don't listen to it. Or look at it. [she points at it, her voice raising a little, and her finger extending into another tentacle to flick in the invisible assailant's direction.] Fuck off, whoever you are. You're making her upset, and that's a dick move.
no subject
it's a constant tug of war that a lot of times lead to disaster. it's... this exact thing that cause of a screw-up in missions and silco's death. and throughout of the years of vi's absence, silco's goons that had seen jinx be this way would normally back away or ignore. in fact, the zaunities that known of jinx never address her or try to soothe her. but why would they really? while zaun was split to be for or against silco, those that were for him were also afraid of jinx. to be expected, really, and truly she enjoyed bringing the fear in their eyes. )
(so to have vi here speaking to her in lull, addressing and then confronting "mylo", it's extremely unexpected. it's a slow turn but she gazes up to her sister -- her form transforms but only for her eyes to appear. her eyes may still be pink but they are round and doe-eyed; a look of a girl that died so long ago. her three squid hearts are swelling as she watches vi telling mylo off just like when she was younger and he said all of those awful things; true or not.)
no subject
but (picking me up when all the colors were black) picking her up, though? she thinks she can stomach being that - she wants to be it now, to pick up what mess she's had a hand in making (vander in her head now: you can't unring a bell, vi) ...in breaking.
she can't put her sister back together. that's impossible. she's a person, not a broken mug (or a smashed valdiani). but she can pick her up even if she can't see the colors.
so she unblinkingly looks into those familiar/unfamiliar eyes, both hands now under the water, under her sistersquid, kneeling in the pool now, neck deep and scooping up the little creature into her arms.]
You've got this. We've got this.
no subject
she doesn't have to do all of this alone anymore. it'll be hard to get use to that thought but why not start now in believing? in her arms, jinx squid coos(?) and settles in with ease. vi will feel some strange wiggling after a while though as the squid begins to grown -- steadily forming back to her real form (this time, her braids got undone and now is just long, long, locks of blue all over). the downside is she is naked again. so they will need to venture for some clothing but whenever she is her again, she'll just look up at vi with a small yet apologetic smile.)
... Sorry. I-I dunno why I changed back.
no subject
vi doesn't know either - but it's not unheard of? might be a trouble spot in the future, for safety reasons - then again, it could be a safety in itself, too. kind of a double edged sword, here. that certainly tracks.]
Take your time. It ...happens?
[she attempts to move some of that hair, directing it back and over what are jinx's newly human shoulders with her own shifting limb, trying to not make a tangle of it all, but at least they hopefully won't get caught in it.]
Well, whoever's in charge here can suck an egg for taking your stuff. [to no one in particular, she adds:] It's chilly, you assholes. Really? [her hands have re-formed, and the legs are swift to follow - she's clothed, but most of those clothes are wet. the draped black cloak she'd been wearing, though - even water doesn't seem to cling to it. it's half-dry even in the water, and she can at least offer that up when jinx is ready. sand gets into places where you just don't want it.]
no subject
(it is definitely chilly but more than chilly. jinx feels practically fidget like this as she instantly links her arms around her own frame. but when she sees her sister offering her help, jinx doesn't think twice and raises back up to her feet. this time around, her legs don't feel like jello but it's still a weird sensation from legs to no legs.
with both her arms latch onto vi's one, she frown over at her own hair. while she treasures it and the thought of having any scissors near it (besides maybe trimming her ends) is a deadly sin to her, it gets... rather annoying having to deal with it and making sure it doesn't get tangled or stepped on.)
You... wouldn't happen to have a hair tie or somethin', would you?
(she is being hopeful but her sister's hairstyle is drastically different and why would she carry one in the first place? still. she can wishful.)
no subject
so she tears off a piece long enough to wind several times - it's probably no longer sanitary for medical reasons, but it should be functional and strong enough to do this job.]
Yeah. Might even find 'em washed up on the beach later. [this place is weird like that.] I've got ...this should work? [holding up the cloth strip, frowning slightly.]
If you can get it all into a shape I can wrap this around, I think we're golden.
[never cut your hair, jinx, it is glorious.]
no subject
Alright, let's try this then.
(she can only hope this bandage cloth of hers is strong enough to contain all of this hair.)
no subject
I think we're good.
[time to slip the cloak from her own shoulders now - it's a weird thing, a dry-wet inky fabric, but it'll cover her for now. it's effective at being a barrier to most things, corruption and blood included. it's irreplaceable - a sleeper only ever gets one - but she hands it over with no hesitation. and tears off another piece of wet bandage in case it needs to be belted.]
no subject
Sheesh, you really got this down pack. The whole "lendin' a hand" thing. — Guess you've been doin' a lotta helpin' out?
(probably not much of a surprise. when they were younger, vi always helped out to anyone who was interested in fighting better or leaping from place to place. so surely something like this wouldn't be any different. despite their awkward relationship, it's... good to know her big sister had been holding up okay and being kind.)
no subject
It's one way to keep busy. I figured why not, y'know? It's a way to be useful. To feel useful, too.
[that last thing is an admission of vulnerability. sure, she might look like she has her shit together most of the time. but it's a different playing field here. she can help all she wants, and she can want that better world - but she's still finding her place as much as she's settling in, and she's not nearly as experienced or as powerful as some she's met.]
But yeah. Some of it'd probably bore you to tears, but not all of it. I'm doing okay. [a small squeeze of her sister's shoulder] Better thank just okay, now.
no subject
the squeeze of her shoulder shushes her mind momentarily before attempting to give her a small smile.)
I'm glad. That... you've been doing okay.
(ah, they should probably walk out of this pool before she gets sick or something. so jinx is the first to step out while keeping the cloak nice and wrapped around her as much as she could for warmth.)
no subject
Wanna see something cool? It's safe. Safer than safe, I promise. But it's still cool.
no subject
(she stops for a moment to glance over her shoulder up to her sister. while vi is smiling, jinx is smirking -- kind but if not a little impish. especially with the next thing she'll ask her:)
Does it involve shootin' something or blowin' things up? 'Cuz I could use that right about now.
(because doing those two things are defintiely safe if one knew how to handle weaponry properly.)
no subject
Not yet, but I'm pretty sure we can make that happen.
[inkdark smoke begings to pour out of her chest, and she looks down at it like hello there, a clear indicator of "this was expected" rather than "what the fuck" - she doesn't want to surprise jinx in the bad way, expecially after she's already reverted once. the smoke curls itself into the shape of something more wolf than dog - a look back at vi with a seeming smile, before she increases her size to stand at shoulder height.]
This is my ome---
[fang takes it from here:]
ᴍʏ ɴᴀᴍᴇ ɪꜱ ꜰᴀɴɢ. ʜᴇʟʟᴏ, ᴊɪɴx. ᴏɴᴄᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ᴄʟɪᴍʙ ᴏɴ ɪ ᴄᴀɴ ɢʀᴏᴡ ᴇᴠᴇɴ ʟᴀʀɢᴇʀ ɪꜰ ᴛʜᴀᴛ'ꜱ ꜱᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅ ʟɪᴋᴇ.

the expression her face falls in default. a look of solider; a warrior and waiting for her "opponent" to make the first move. attentively, she observes this cloud form into a wolf which she isn't entirely sure whether to be more on guard or to loosen up. vi did say after all this was "cool" so...)
(her eyes decreases in its intense stare and her body loosens up. and when the wolf begins to speak, she is silent for a few seconds:)

Yeah, yeah. You're a badass.
[there's affection in her voice, though.]

(with that and all amped up, jinx wastes no time at all to climb up on fang's back. but then she wonders, how would she hang on to her? gripping on her fur might be painful, right? or maybe she can lightly hold on. perhaps she just wraps her arms around her neck and hunker down.)
So, uh... how would you like me to hold ya?
no subject
[is that a playfully petty dig at vi? well, yes, but vi only sighs and climbs up, too - behind her sister - jinx can have the view.]

Let's do it.
[and just for the hell of it, the omen grows again - approaching the size of three wolves stacked upon one another, and leaps from the rock - circling back toward the black sand and the boardwalk.]
