Stating the obvious isn't an answer, but it's the truth so he can get what he wants to get out of that. Nothing, something, everything but Shigaraki won't mind. It just makes more of the obvious for himself, too. Odd attracts odd.

There's more admission in that single statement, or at least a bloviating if he's bluffing. By the look of him it shouldn't be, most people don't staple themselves if they don't have some reason to.
