[helaena has always thought of her mother as immutable, unchanging; this is her tragedy (helaena would have rather married jace). something has happened to make this laughing girl her sad-eyed mother––helaena doesn't think it is her father, he is gentle (sometimes to a fault). perhaps it is aegon––he is very disappointing. or alicent's own father, who has always scared helaena a little. most likely it is the steps to the dance, the song itself, the web, and the beast in the boards helaena can't quite put a name to. their little world is not kind to laughing girls.

helaena has never known how to explain her dreams to her mother. she has tried before.

her smile is less nervous, more sad now, resigned. this feels familiar. she sticks to what she is certain of. she lets her mother take her hands, but she doesn't exactly grasp them back. sometimes she forgets to hold on.

I am Helaena. Dreamfyre is mine to fly. This is the Waking World; I don't know how long either of us will stay here.

[it is better that we return to the sea, after. You will not grow any higher, I think perhaps you grow smaller, somehow. she looks briefly at her omen. it says only 'the tower, the blood, the hooks, the fish.']
