August Test Drive Meme!

AUGUST 2022 TDM
Another month, another test drive meme! Our test drive memes are open to anyone interested - regardless of whether or not you join our game!

All Test Drive Memes are game canon. Players can choose to keep their TDM threads canon or not. TDM threads can be used for AC and can be used as your writing sample for your application.

Our TDMs serve as a way to build into the actual lore and worldbuilding of Deer Country and we strongly encourage everyone to enjoy and participate! Current players are always welcome to pull prompts from the TDM to reference on the Network or bring into logs as well as tag out to new characters top-leveling on the TDM itself.

Characters will always be able to actively die during TDMs as this is an extremely dangerous world. You can still have this be game canon! Check out how character death in Deer Country works here.

If you have any questions about the TDM, please ask down below!

STANDARD ARRIVAL
WHEN: First Week of September
WHERE: The Farther Shores/The Boardwalk
CONTENT WARNINGS: Monstrous Crabs, Environmental Threat

Normally, the people of Trench would say that September is a fortunate time for sleepers to arrive at it's shores. However, the aftermath of the violent and inconsistent storms in the last month continue to batter the city. The waters are choppy, though they are beginning to calm. The swim is difficult and unsafe, waves threatening to crash unwitting squids into the rocks. It is unlikely to be fatal, but many arrive battered and bruised, gasping as they awaken from their squid form.

Hopefully, you've found something to wear, either in your Welcoming Bag or otherwise, and can start familiarizing yourself with your surroundings. Maybe you help some other squids out on the beach. Waking up sucks! You feel for the little guys. And hey, maybe you're hoping one of those squids is a good friend...Stranger things have happened.

SEASONAL DETAILS ON THE BOARDWALK

With theme music!
The weather is awful, and so the mood of the beach is a bit more subdued than on other occasions. Food is hearty and dry, easily packaged in oilcloth, and containing mostly hard tack, mushrooms and dried, cured fish. Bottles of water are included with the food, enough to ensure that the sleepers are well fed, and enough packets are offered for a few days in case they need them, but they are certainly not the most flavorful or exotic, reflecting much more the day to day food of Trench.

The people leading the waking are gathered and huddled around makeshift structures and lean-tos to deal with the awful weather along the coast during this period. Sleepers are brought here, to fires to warm. Among those who are present are the fishermen and women who work at the docks. They, along with several of the Architects from in town, have set up booths. Though they do not demand it of anyone, they politely hint that in the season of change, it is good to learn new trades and to find a place in this strange world the sleepers have been brought to. As part of this, they are willing to offer a chance for the sleepers to help craft fishing nets and other gear for those who will brave the waters to bring back food in the season.

The task is arduous and taxing, but it is not without reward. To those who choose to participate, one of the fishermen will approach them and wordlessly drop a waterlogged box into their lap. It looks dilapidated and in poor condition, but they will say nothing more, staring off into the sea from which it was dredged. When the sleeper opens it, they will find that there is one additional item within the box, which might have been included in their welcome bag normally. If pressed, the fisherman will only say that they found it dredged up along the shores in the midst of their work.

For those who brave the coasts or the waters, there is an increased threat of monstrous presence, though nothing compared to the prior month. Poisonous crabs lurk along the edges of the waterways. Much larger versions of small crabs known to live in caves along the shore, these beastly adult versions stand about three feet tall, and have particularly strong pincers which secrete a hallucinogenic venom. Victims of it are prone to paranoid delusions of danger around every corner, and known for mistaking those around them as threats. The crabs are themselves carnivorous to boot, so they are certainly a threat on their own, though they are very much killable, and supposedly very good eating. Bring in some crab meat, and it should be good to trade for additional food and supplies this month, if you dare! As with their lesser cousins, the venom of these crabs is particularly dangerous to the psychically sensitive, Palebloods and Darkbloods.

LOST BETWEEN STEPS
WHEN: August 31st-September 29, January 2, February 4, March 6, April 8, June 10, July 12, October 20, November 1, December 24
WHERE: Somewhere, you're not certain where
CONTENT WARNINGS: Labyrinth, Liminal Horror, Severe Disorientation, Autophobia, Monster Horror, Fear of Falling

You just took one step back. That's all. A step backwards while you weren't paying attention, and the sensation of falling assailed you. With a grunt, you found yourelf landing hard, but not hard enough to actually break or turn anything. Around you is a carpeted space. There are old, stained wallpaper walls on every side, set up in variable sized cubicle spaces that look like they should be occupied by an office of some sort. Everything smells like mold, stale and sharp. The carpet is a little bit moist and the wallpapers all seem to be hiding hints of mildew. It feels familiar, but even if you have been in this "place" before it is not quite the same. The wallpaper shades are not exactly right. It always feels like you should know it, but you cannot quite place it.

You are not alone in this place. Another seems to have fallen in this place, thank god because the muffled sounds of these halls are already getting oppressive. The electric hum of fluorescent are buzzing in your ears like a plague of locusts and you can practically feel the migraine coming from the unremitting light, but you dare not take shelter to let your eyes rest in the gaps in the lighting. It feels like there is something there. You should probably be leaving, though that's where the problem really begins. No method seems to clearly work. There are no identifiable features to pick out. After several turns, you might find yourself facing impossibly thin hallways or a dead end. Attempts to keep track of your passage with writing, torn wallpaper and balls of twine fail, as it becomes increasingly and inconsistently disorientating, inevitably causing the lead to be lost, or worse? It might seem to be going the wrong direction. Did someone move it? Magic compasses, even those given by the Pthumerians do not work in this "place" This should not be possible, but it is true.

An hour in, because it always takes longer than that, or does it? Time can be hard to keep track of and omnis don't tell time properly here. Whatever, an hour in, and the need to get out of this place will be getting to those trapped within. They do not belong here, and must escape. The harder you run, the more that the dank odor gets under the skin, worsening even if you should not be able to smell it. Occasional items can be found, but all are useless. If you are fortunate, perhaps you will eventually find a hole in the floor. But, looking down it, you cannot see the bottom. Do you dare leap down, not knowing the end? If you do, the passage seems to go far too long to be healthy. The rush of air and the feel of fraying wallpaper comes until you find yourself deposited on the ground of Trench, in front of the statue of the Tower, or in front of the gates of Gaze.

The less fortunate may finally find writing on the walls. Someone else has been in this place. But, as the cryptic words proclaim the need to S̵̨̡̟̗̰̝͚̲̦̗͔̥̞̈͂̆̿̐́̅̓͐͝T̸̠̥̰̭͎͙̮̬͋̀͛̓̽̚Ā̷̧̮̣̪̤̠̫̤͔̩̥̾̊̍̊̀̇͋̍̚͜͝͝Y̶͓̟̍̆̍ ̴̭̲̀͘͝S̵̨͖̩̻̰͇͎̠̻͚͓̱͇̭͖͒̋͆̀͐͋̾̆͝͝T̴̮̹̫̞̘̈́̏̐̒̋̎͛̂̽̅Ĩ̵͙̖̟̥̤̲̆̈́́͘ͅͅL̵͖̣̫̙̹̊͜L̷̫̠̒̽͌͘͠. A ghastly sound erupts from behind you, complete with unnatural, horrid breathing. Steps come towards you unnaturally fast. If you move, look to turn, there is a vision of something black moving into your field of vision, just before a bone-crushing force claims life and in the next moment you wake, screaming at the feet of the gates to Gaze, or the Tower's statue. Remain absolutely still, and the puff of a breath, the smell of cow hair and breath grazes over the shoulder before eventually storming away behind, until the sound is gone, and the unlucky are left to continue searching until they find a hole leading out.

NOTES:
1. Any step backwards can cause someone to end up between places, participating in this event. Exiting requires either falling through one of the holes in the floor or being killed by the unnamed creatures residing between spaces.
2. If a character dies in this event, they do not undergo normal death effects. They awaken in one of the locations indicated, gasping for breath. While harrowing, and possibly a source of nightmares for the next few days, not to mention chills for an hour or two, there is no further apparent harm.
3. It is possible to encounter this prompt throughout the year. At one random, unpredictable day each month (listed above), the space between spaces is accessible. A person could theoretically fall in on that day, following the rules as above.
4. Mapping the space between spaces is difficult, but not impossible. Perhaps there are other locations within the labyrinthian mass, but for now at least they are not findable.
5. If the natives are asked about this place, they will make a warding sign and refuse to speak of them. At most, they will say something about the "veins of the tower."

ABSOLUTE IMMERSION
WHEN: Last Week of August through all of September
WHERE: Gaze, and somewhere else
CONTENT WARNINGS: Possible Life-threatening experiences, Distorted Realities, Fourth Walling, Content Depending upon the Canon Referenced

As the month of September approaches, and Mariana shows signs of having cooled in her wrath, the people of Trench begin to relax once again. Hoping to keep level heads and to promote learning, the Arcane Scholars of Gaze have opened the private stores of more rare texts from the Archaic Archives. Trundling carts of books are being brought out by roped and masked individuals who kindly offer one to anyone who wishes to partake. They limit each guest to three, though they seem happy to trade a book for a book, so it's always possible to get more. They ask only that the books be returned by the end of the month for cleaning and maintenance. Whispers among the Disciples still with ruffled feathers at Mariana's wrath are that this is Never Mind's way of reasserting himself after strange magical books have been found around town. No Arcane Scholar will acknowledge such gossip, however.

The books seem harmless enough. What is wrong with a little light reading? The fiction within is quite enthralling, though after a page or two, a creepy familiarity to the book's contents comes to whoever reads. There is a sense of deja vu, and only when it is too late do they realize that it feels like they are reading the memories and recollections of someone else, perhaps someone that they know! In that moment, they will feel an inexorable pull as the book seems to literally suck them into it, along with anyone unlucky enough to be next to them!

Those who read these magical books will find themselves trapped in an event within another canon reality. The intent, of course, is to broaden their horizons and experiences, to teach moral lessons through new memories, but as always Never Mind seems not to understand the possible perils. The scenario that they find themselves in, which may be of any canon, is always one of immediate and very real peril, a time in which the character's life is put into immediate and very real peril. They have to prevail or flee successfully to escape the chapter and end the book, though for their troubles it is quite possible that they might bring something back with them. Hopefully it's nothing dangerous!

NOTES:
1. Any Canon may be used, including canons not present in the game. Players are encouraged to use their imaginations, though it is worth being aware that the entirety of the Cthuluh Mythos may be found among these collections, should one wish to utilize these books.
2. There is an actual physical threat that is present in whatever scene is viewed. If it is necessary, a threat is fabricated from the fringes of the memory, even if this changes the canonical scene. It is a real threat and can cause death or harm. However, these threats are killable through all normal fashions, and can be escaped by clever captives. Once escaped or defeated, the sleeper is deposited out of the book.
3. The books are absolutely indestructible, and even if the sleeper does not return them, ravens will break into their home (ruining a window and making a mess) to retrieve all books by the end of September. Multiple books can be enjoyed throughout the month.
4. Items retrieved may be anything from any canon which does not count as a significant power acquisition. Weapons can be brought, though they will be mundane once they emerge in Trench. Players are limited to retrieving one item from another canon per character during the month.

[Adaine is out for a late-night walk, investigating a rare root she read about that apparently grows in caves below Crenshaw. She comes back with a bag of the stuff, but she's not optimistic that they'll have the effect that she wants them to. So far, all they've done is writhe like creepy worms.

She glances at the blue light flickering, and squints to see the source. Even in the dead of night, her eyes adjust to the light of the stars.

...Ah.]

Are you practicing magic?

[That was probably rude. Still, her interest is immediately piqued.]
adaine: (and it teases you for weeks)

[personal profile] adaine 2022-08-31 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Adaine doesn't look up immediately, there's a distinct flash of annoyance at being interrupted in fact. Who goes up to someone reading and then decides to pull them out of it to socialize with them? Bizarre. Rude, even! But, Adaine's not rude, so eventually she allows her brain to mentally process the words that were said to her.]

...It's called the Girl In The Bubble. It's some kind of... fairy tale? [Uncomfortably close to her own trauma, though for the moment she's willing to pretend that's probably a coincidence.

Eventually, though, she glances up and blinks at the girl in front of her.]

...Jinx?

[She'd only known Jinx very briefly, of course, for the month and a half she'd even been in Trench, and they weren't exactly... friends? But Adaine had been strangely fond of her despite her... everything.

Vi's certainly going to be happy, at least.]

(OOC: Adaine had very brief CR with the Jinx that we had in game where they got trapped in a labyrinth together, I can edit that if you'd prefer not to deal with it!)

(quietly watching, jinx folds her arms over her chest as she stands a bit awkwardly. now that it's just the two of them (with fang) and all the "drama" things has passed for now, it's strange to have such a normal and decent quiet moment with vi. sure, they are sisters but there's so many years they need to catch up on. or well if they can catch up on.

clearing her throat a little, she blows her bangs away from her eyes and readjusts her stance.)

Yeah, I, uh. After I shower, I can just... try it on and go from there.
opheliac: ✖ malagraphic (no you cant control)

(OOC: nah it's cool!! tbh, if i get accepted in, i was gonna have jinx do a network post about "YO so apparently ive been here before? who here knows me? tell me who u are" anyway. so you're good!)

("girl in the bubble"? sounds like a pretty lame story. because what can you write about beyond the fact the girl is in a bubble and stranded inside? but when this stranger says her name, jinx quirks an eyebrow with her hands on her hips.)

Yeeeaaahh...? That's me. What's it to ya?

(did vi yammer on about her to another person beyond sansa? it's still such a weird concept of people knowing her but her not knowing them. sure, she would want people to know her name but what's the point if she hadn't made her grand entrance yet? it takes the fun out of everything!!)

The feeling of something prickles along his skin. Energy? A presence? The general feeling of being watched? The options are all equally likely. He stays frozen, not even daring to lift his hands, to summon light, energy.

"Remain very still."

It's the only thing he can think of. If it's this difficult for them to see, maybe it will be the same for whatever is lurking.

"Ah, dear - I'm terrible at gambling."

He is not. The uncanny luck of his. But he's always one to downplay it. Downplay a lot of things. Still, it would be best if he went first anyway. More possible protection that way. Something about this place sets his hair on end. Sends warning through his entire body. They aren't alone here.

So he'll pick a door at random. Trusting that weird luck of his. And as that would have it -

"Another hallway?"

At least it's more or less empty. Just another endless corridor.

[Interesting. The canine doesn't seem corporeal? Maybe the claw had passed through its fur instead of flesh. Is if not a real animal? Who even knows - this is the guy with a dragon who turns into a car, anything's possible.]

[He's quick to follow, to hop up onto the boardwalk. His hands flex, ready to ward them off if need be. But it doesn't seem to be that necessary. The smaller creatures are already scuttling back toward the water.]

I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with those terms. What do you mean by 'dark' and 'pale' blood?

[sansa's mouth curves to one side; she weighs jinx's silence against the things she could have said, and considers it one more stone in the bridge between them. she doesn't expect trust, nor does she trust jinx herself. a small part of her expects even her closest friends to reveal they've been pretending the whole time. everyone is your enemy. everyone is your friend. she tries not to wonder if she'll ever be rid of littlefinger's voice in her head; she drops another coil of thread and follows.]

Coldblood magic is the best for fighting, anyway. You could freeze someone to death very easily if you had to, or put them to sleep.

[it occurs to sansa that she could probably manage as much with the cold bloodstone rings underneath her grey linen gloves. she has only ever used them to cool the air, but it wouldn't take very much to kill a human, let alone subdue them, she doesn't think. beasts might be different. it would be a good way to subdue them long enough to cleanse them, if they knew how much cold it took. she doesn't see a clear way to finding out, though.]

It might be a good way to quiet Beasts that used to be people long enough to turn them back.

There is something so very familiar here. Sure, there's no house, there's not an inn, or even a vehicle. They're alone, on a beach, while Gojyo goes out foraging for shellfish and Hakkai... turns in the nets he'd been assisting with. Trades it in, really, for a package of provisions.

Not much to it. Dried mushrooms, hard bread, some salted and preserved fish. It's not bad - he's done more with less. And at least it's not canned. Plus, with only two of them...

Right. That should be a blessing now, shouldn't it?

He's claimed a vacant fire by the time the crab rustling is done, soaking the mushrooms in some water, while boiling another little pot. Seawater won't be drinkable, but it will add some decent flavor without other seasonings. It will work, and he summons up a real smile as Gojyo saunters back.

"If you'll remove the claws, the water should be ready for them."

Yeah, we're not taking any chances with poison pincers today.

Hakkai didn't have to tell him twice. He froze, tensing his muscles and focusing on controlling his breathing.

He tried to sense what his companion was, hear or feel whatever had him on edge. But whatever preternatural senses he had, Adam lacked. So he kept his focus on Hakkai, prepared to move, attack or run on his call.

Robby might not see it if his gaze keeps resting out towards the shore, rather than back at her, but Chizuru's eyes definitely widen when she hears that question from him.

It's not even like she's never heard surprising questions before from people right after they turn back into people. She knows your mind is a mess during those moments, so random thoughts and questions slip out, occasionally even managing to fluster the girl. But this is no fluster, it's just.. ordinary surprise, and perhaps a bit of admiration. Chizuru doesn't know the other in the slightest. Robby doesn't even look like he comes from the same world as her - or at the very least not the same place or time.

But something about him asking that so quickly, so instinctively, speaks of great kindness to her.

She could be wrong. Even Chizuru knows that. But the part of her that always wants to believe in other people wants to believe in this too.

".. yes. Everyone is keeping an eye out for the squids. No one should be lost to the roughness of the sea."

Though Chizuru's voice still sounds gentle as she says that, it also sounds like she means it. Even though there are some scary people here, and even a few cruel people, she knows that so many people do their best to make sure the newcomers end up here alright, especially during the moments where the sea is not quite so calm or gentle.

She just hopes that thought is reassuring to him.

Though it also makes her wonder how much he remembers. How much is coming back to him. He remembers the others in the water, at least, so maybe..

"Do you remember your name..?" She doesn't know if he's quite there yet.

He keeps still. Absolutely still. Almost afraid to breathe. Something is bearing down on them. Something moving with the slow, deliberate step of a predator. Something that knows exactly where they are.

His head moves, ever so slightly. No - don't move.

If they move, they're spotted. If they move, they lose. Maybe their lives.

...Ah, right. [Memory issues... this seems to be a common enough occurrence lately. It might not even be the same person, really, or not the same iteration at any rate? There's two Himiko Togas last time she checked.

She frowns.]

I, um, kind of knew you when you were here before? Not very well, mind, I just let you make bombs in my lab. It's complicated, but sometimes people don't remember their time here when they wash back up.

[Jinx is a hard person to get to know well. At least that's her observations thus far.]

I'm Adaine. By the way. [She still hasn't... closed the book. Something makes her want to keep reading, even mid conversation.]

[This scorpion woman is probably one of the safest people she could hope to meet! When she's not accidentally stinging anyone, at least. Scorpia does quickly feel the need to protect the younger girl now that she's come to her senses, and that helps her to feel relatively centered even as her surroundings inspire feelings of anxiety within her. It definitely doesn't look like there's any clear way out just yet...

In any case, she greets her with a friendly smile.]

Hi there Akko! I'm happy to meet you. My name's Scorpia. I've been here in Trench for a while! I, I can help show you the ropes! I'm also used to ending up in random places, but falling like what happened just now? That, it's a new way of ending up somewhere for me, for sure!

[ When Ochako calls for space, Akko actually begins to take a step back! Surely the superhero carrying a dangerously oversized load of cargo knows what she's talking about. There is an immense amount of flailing and indignant shouting as she's dragged back even further by the scruff, and when she is released she shouts "I WAS GOING!!" after the sailor's back, who simply waves her off and continues doing his job. The nerve of some people.

Akko brightens visibly when Ochako catches up to her though, all signs of irritation instantly disappearing. ]

Ochako-chan! I'm fine, I just hate being moved like that. Anyway, I'm so glad you remember me - I disappeared and came back as a squid again and I wasn't sure how long I was gone. How are you?

[ The worst part is that she's right and Akko knows it. The last time she did this, she let herself reshape, let herself become whole, and remembered how to be a person very quickly because a grouchy man on the beach told her to hurry up. This time has been much rougher on her because she feels like she knows what she's supposed to do, and chasing that feeling has ironically chased away the familiarity of the process. It's a recurring theme for her.

Her tongue is still a little numb, so it's hard to form words, but that's never stopped Akko before and she doesn't see why it should now. She fails to say it clearly the first time, takes a deep breath, and tries again, though she has to pause and breathe a few times: ]

I don't know...why it's so much worse this time. [ Akko digs her toes into the sand. Notes she can feel them more precisely now. ] My name is...Akko. By the way.

Aw man, I hate studying...

[ Her faces screws up into a pout for a moment. Boy this is starting to sound like school - blood magic, pacts, moon charged artifacts...this sounds like the technical stuff Akko always glazed over back home. But if she has to get serious about the boring parts of magic to make it work here in Trench, she will. She has to - she can't imagine a life without magic. It'll just be...hard. Akko and focusing on textbooks are not compatible concepts. ]

Oh well, I'll do whatever it takes to be a witch, even if I have to read dusty old books to do it!

[ A pause. Earth, huh? Must be a different Earth than Akko comes from. This whole world hopping thing is still kind of surreal to her. ]

Everyone from my Earth has magic inside of them, they just have to learn how to use it. But if that magic is externalized, it can be harvested to power someone else's magic...or something like that? They were one-of-a-kind spells that won't ever be used again, though. That's what happened to my magic. You have to kind of regrow it after something like that happens.

[ Congrats, you left her speechless. Akko stands frozen in stunned silence before practically sprinting to catch up to Jinx. It's not that she wants to be in her company - not anymore, anyway - it's the principle of "you can't shake me off like that". ]

That's dumb! Two wrongs don't make a right, Jinx! Just because magic can hurt people doesn't mean it should be used for that. And payback just hurts more people and keeps the cycle going forever. Is that really what you want?
thatsmymagic: (5)

[personal profile] thatsmymagic 2022-08-31 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Like what?

[ Akko does appreciate the reminder that she's not alone, because these hallways feel gut-wrenchingly lonely. Like they've been empty for ages. There's no signs of life anywhere she looks, just...the feeling that something knows they're here. And in that sense there MUST be life here. But that seems very much less comforting than she'd hoped. ]

He wonders how likely it is everyone will make it. No - rather, he knows that it's unlikely to happen. Or so he feels that in his chest, a pessimistic belief despite the reassurance voiced. But it's not to do with anything that Chizuru says or the way he says it. It's just life, isn't it? That some people are unfortunate, while others aren't; and sometimes, life just turns out that way.

But when Robby looks back at her, there's a twitch by the side of his mouth, a smile that doesn't really become that. He takes his focus back onto his limbs, eyes glancing down on his body (naked -- and there's a more noticeable twisting in his gut of his state, getting ever close to shame and embarrassment) but rises again to her question. A side glance, thinking. His name, his name.

"I'm..." There's a sound on the tip of his tongue, as far as it'll go. Annoyance pinches at his brow before he looks back at her, the tug to the side of his mouth this time apologetic. "I'm a guy. I know I have one-"

But he'll leave the obvious spoken without words. Turns his head instead to the clothing beside the girl, nods to it.

"You mind?"

The motion isn't fluid, but he opens the palm of his free hand, not yet outstretched but waiting.

[ Akko looks up at the sound of Adaine's voice, a bit surprised to see someone else. Honestly she wasn't expecting anyone to be out this late - she was only out here herself because her magic seemed to come easier to her under the light of the moon. But her surprise quickly melts into a broad smile. ]

Yeah! I have to practice if I'm going to be a great witch one day. Or, I guess I have to figure out how to get my wand to even work in Trench first. Why, do you know a lot about magic?

Whatever initial wariness the other boy (still nameless) seemed to have felt about Paul specifically appears to be receding. Paul is trying to make fewer inferences, do less of his own kind of weaving out of hints and suggestions and minor tells in other people's appearance and behavior, but it's a hard habit to break.

He's skittish. He talks about his world in terms of dealing with people, following their rules. One of the first things he's done on arrival was find work, even though it's not what he's used to, and he's accepting the strangeness around him more calmly than most. Figuring it out, in his words. This boy is a survivor.

And he doesn't like mushrooms. That goes into a different kind of mental record.

"I'd never seen cars before I came here." Paul offers back, and a decision tips over. He looks up and down the boardwalk, then folds himself into a cross-legged seat in front of the boy, ending up positioned below him looking slightly up. He reopens his box to get a grape leaf for himself, unfolding the way the other boy did. He scoops up a portion of rice and crab meat with his fingers and pops it into his mouth, showing abominable manners, but it's interesting to try in a new formulation.

"We used boats, or flying craft. Do you like cars? I know the people who have them here." One of them is promising to teach him how to drive them, when he has time. "Maybe they're from your world, or one similar - do you call your planet Earth? A lot of people here do."

It's a roll of the dice. The boy might have a reason to avoid people from his world, if Paul's intuitions are pointing the right way, which is why he stops short of offering to introduce them directly.

[ She her the ropes? Heck yeah, she could use a primer on Trench - her plan was to just stick her nose everywhere until she figured it out, but she's starting to second guess that approach given that so far it's landed her in this place. Akko's smile widens. ]

When we get out of here, you gotta show me all the best food places first. I haven't gotten to eat much yet. [ Which is true. She's been busy exploring and finding shelter - not a ton of time to grocery shop. That being said. ] Er, speaking of...we should start looking for a way out.

[ Unfortunately the ceiling above looks solid, and the hallways all turn sharply so you can't see what's down them. Akko holds her chin for a second, shrugs, and points arbitrarily to the left. ]

I guess we'll just have to start walking, unless you have any ideas of where to go.

Sato tilts his head to the side. What a surprise... The old man walks cautiously through the door into the next corridor.

"Such an odd labyrinth, no?" Sato asks. "It seems that the farther forward yields more and more twists and turns."

The two continue forward. The old man notices a bright light ahead. He points towards the direction of an open door.

"Now, that's new." He states with a skeptical scoff. "The writing on the wall marks a warning. Though...is it worth a shot to just explore where the path leads?"

Sato glances at the young man with a smile. He doesn't know what Hakkai may think. However, it's evident that Sato enjoys testing the limits of the space that they are in.

[ They are superficial, the markings he has. Red in spots, bumps that'll lead to bruising but won't be too an inconvenience. He's certainly more cautious about the woman, if not as jumpy as he could be - recognising that she saved him, likely meant to, or there's just a gamble here in putting a modicum of trust in her when he has little to no advantages.

There's just an air about her that wants him to keep caution, even the way she speaks. But he recognises the hint of a softer edge that betrays her (natural or otherwise) vibe, and either way, he works on trying to do what she asks. There might be a push in him now, call it a spur of inspiration to pick himself up more; hands now on his upper legs, a better sitting position before.

But, going from there - ]

I-- can't figure out how. [ Reluctantly he admits to it, a furrow to his brow that he has to. He can manage as far as lifting his torso to straighten his upper legs, but his brain can't quite figure out the 'getting off your knees' part of standing.

He can try more from there, maybe start to drag a foot without thought of balancing his torso -- and topple from there, to the side.

101 ways to look uncool to women on a first meeting. :( ]
