He nods and focuses, and a faint aura emits from him. He rushes towards the creature, bashing into it with his shield. He slashes the tentacles and backs up, trying to draw the tentacles out.

It seems to work, as the creature turns towards him, slapping him with tentacles and trying to grab him with some of the other ones.
